Job description

Amentum is the Technical Advisor to PEJ Sp z o.o. (PEJ), the state-owned entity responsible for delivering Poland’s first nuclear power programme.

We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support the delivery and oversight of site preparation and construction activities in Pomerania region.

The role will initially be site based near to Gdynia, focusing on oversight of large-scale earthworks, ground preparation and associated geotechnical / civil construction activities.

The successful candidate will work closely with other geotechnical specialists, civil engineers, construction management teams, contractors and other Client representatives to provide geotechnical oversight of construction activities and verification that works are undertaken in accordance with the approved design, specifications, project quality requirements and permits.

This role would suit an intermediate-to senior level geotechnical engineer who has developed a good technical grounding in geotechnical engineering, has existing site-based construction experience and is looking to build further experience in the delivery of complex construction works.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities are expected to include:
  • Provide day-to-day geotechnical support and oversight of construction activities on site.
  • Monitor / oversight of large-scale earthworks operations, including, for example, deep excavations, material handling, temporary stockpiling, placement and compaction of fill and dewatering / drainage activities.
  • Undertake and/or review soil logging and verify fill classification during excavation and construction activities.
  • Support verification of the suitability and acceptability of site-won and imported fill materials for use within the works.
  • Monitor / verify fill placement, layer thickness, moisture conditioning and compaction activities.
  • Review field and laboratory testing associated with earthworks, including density, moisture content, grading and other relevant acceptance testing.
  • Verify the assessment of unsuitable, weak, organic or otherwise non-compliant materials encountered during construction.
  • Support resolution of geotechnical issues and unexpected ground conditions (with reachback to senior geotechnical engineers where necessary).
  • Review contractor method statements, inspection and test plans, technical submittals and construction records from a geotechnical perspective.
  • Participate in inspections and construction quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain clear and accurate site records, including observations, photographs and any related inspection records.
  • Assist with preparation of technical notes and reports
  • Liaise with contractors, designers, construction teams and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support other geotechnical engineers and Subject Matter Experts in providing technical oversight of the works.
  • Promote safe working practices and identify geotechnical or construction activities that could present a risk to personnel, the works or adjacent infrastructure.
  • As the project progresses, the role will expand to support other geotechnical construction activities including but not limited to deep excavations, retaining structures, foundations, ground improvement, dewatering and other temporary works.
Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant professional experience in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology or civil construction.
  • Practical understanding of soil behaviour and soil classifications in accordance with Eurocode 7.
  • Experience of, or strong familiarity with, earthworks construction and ground investigation.
  • Ability to interpret exploratory hole records, laboratory testing, specifications, in-situ testing / laboratory testing, drawings and geotechnical reports.
  • Willingness and ability to work predominantly in a site-based construction environment.
  • Good technical reporting and communication skills.
  • Comfortable with working in a remote location.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams.

Desirable:

  • Professional license to supervise site constructions
  • Previous experience supervising or inspecting large-scale earthworks and deep excavations.
  • Experience with excavation, and earthworks design and construction.
  • Experience undertaking or supervising ground investigations and soil logging.
  • Experience working with earthworks specifications and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Familiarity with Eurocode 7 and European geotechnical standards.
  • Experience reviewing contractor method statements and technical submissions.
  • Experience working on major infrastructure, energy, nuclear, industrial or similar complex major projects.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical construction quality assurance and non-conformance processes.
Candidate Profile
  • The position is particularly suited to an engineer who combines a sound understanding of geotechnical engineering with a strong interest in construction and site delivery.
  • The successful candidate should be comfortable spending significant time in the field, observing construction activities and providing oversight to works and acting as a review function.
  • The candidate will form part of an expanding multidisciplinary site team, noting that an extensive reach back to Office based geotechnical support is planned throughout the site period.
  • Experience gained through site supervision, ground investigation, earthworks construction or contractor-side geotechnical engineering would therefore be particularly valuable.
Project Environment

The position provides an opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team supporting the development of Poland's first nuclear power plant.
