Job summary

Remitly Poland in Kraków seeks a Director of Engineering, Builder Infrastructure, to shape the multi-region Builder Infrastructure domain. You will guide Cloud Engineering, Container Platform, and Infrastructure Security, setting long-term strategy and aligning teams across Kraków and the US.

You will lead engineering managers, drive API-driven self-service platforms, AI-operated infrastructure, and strong security posture while balancing reliability, cost, and velocity.

Responsibilities

• Define a strategy for Builder Infrastructure across regions and services and translate it into domain goals.
• Design domain boundaries, ownership model, and workforce plan across Krakow and the US.
• Lead engineering managers and senior engineers, building bench and succession plans.
• Run infrastructure as a product with published APIs, tracking adoption, lead time, and toil.
• Set direction for AI-operated infrastructure with policy and human approvals for changes.
• Own end-to-end security implementation, from least-privilege identities to hardened images.
• Make trade-off decisions balancing reliability, security, cost, and delivery speed.
• Manage infrastructure spend as a unit cost with finance and tech leadership.
• Partner with Security, SRE, Builder Experience, and product leaders on cross-domain problems.
• Establish visibility mechanisms for team health, delivery, and operational quality.

About the Role

The Builder Platform is focused on giving every builder at Remitly a self-service path from idea to production. With AI, builders now include all employees, as well as the agents working with all of them. Builder Infrastructure is the foundation of that platform, running the infrastructure and networking behind a remittance business that moves money around the world every hour of every day. The next few years mean tailoring it to be AI-first and global by default, with growth absorbed by software and agents.

The Director of Engineering, Builder Infrastructure leads three teams through their managers: Cloud Engineering, Container Platform, and Infrastructure Security. The role sets the multi-year direction for the domain, decides how ownership is divided across teams and geographies, and is accountable to executive leadership for the velocity, reliability, security posture, and cost of Remitly's infrastructure.

You Will:

• Define a strategy for Builder Infrastructure that anticipates Remitly's growth in regions, accounts, and services, and turn it into domain goals your managers own
• Design the domain: team boundaries, ownership model, and workforce plan across Krakow and the US, so each team ships independently behind clear interfaces
• Lead and develop engineering managers and senior engineers, and build the bench and succession plans that let the organization run well without you in every decision
• Run infrastructure as a product, with paved roads and published APIs, and with adoption, lead time, and toil as the measures of success
• Set the direction for AI-operated infrastructure, where agents provision, patch, upgrade, and remediate within policy and people approve the changes that carry real risk
• Own the security implementation of the platform end to end, from least-privilege identity for people, workloads, and agents to hardened images that are rebuilt and rolled out continuously
• Make the deciding call on tradeoffs with serious consequences across reliability, security, cost, and delivery speed, and rebalance investment between new capabilities and technical debt
• Manage infrastructure spend as a unit cost with finance and engineering leadership, and fund the investments that return more than they cost as the business scales
• Partner with Security, SRE, Builder Experience, and product engineering leaders on cross-domain problems, and represent the domain to the executive team
• Establish mechanisms that give you visibility into team health, delivery, and operational quality without excessive oversight

You Have:

• A point of view, grounded in practice, on how AI agents change infrastructure operations and the shape of the teams that run them
• Experience leading multiple infrastructure or platform teams through engineering managers, ideally across countries and time zones
• A track record of setting and delivering a multi-year infrastructure strategy that changed how an engineering organization builds and ships
• Experience designing engineering organizations: drawing team boundaries, planning headcount across geographies, and raising the quality of engineering management
• Infrastructure that scaled ahead of business growth with sublinear headcount, delivered through automation, self-service, and API-driven control planes
• Depth across cloud, container, and identity systems sufficient to review large-scale designs and explain why current approaches replaced earlier ones
• Experience running infrastructure in a regulated environment, with security and compliance treated as design constraints from the start
• Credibility with executives up to the C-suite, translating infrastructure risk, cost, and investment into business terms

Skills and Technologies

• Agentic infrastructure operations: LLM agents, MCP integrations, and the guardrails, audit trails, and approval flows that let agents act on production safely
• Cloud foundations on AWS, GCP, or Azure: multi-account governance, IaC and API-driven control planes, and multi-region and edge networking
• Kubernetes fleet management: multi-cluster operations, cluster lifecycle and upgrades, autoscaling, and GitOps delivery
• Istio service mesh, including ambient mode, for traffic management, mTLS, and zero-trust service-to-service communication
• Identity at organization scale: IAM, workload identity (SPIFFE/SPIRE, EKS Pod Identity), just-in-time access, and governance of non-human and agent identities
• Image and supply chain security: golden image pipelines, CIS hardening, SBOMs, image signing (Sigstore), SLSA, and automated patching with staged fleet rollout
• Policy as code and admission control (OPA Gatekeeper, Kyverno) across the cloud and cluster layers
• FinOps unit economics and compliance frameworks for financial services (PCI DSS, SOC 2)

Compensation Details

The starting base salary range for this position is typically zł576,000 – 648,000per annum. In Poland, Remitly employees are shareholders in our Company and equity is part of our total compensation plan. Remitly Poland applies increased tax deductible costs (KUP) to remuneration earned by certain qualifying employees (to the extent an employee will be involved in the creation of the software as an "author") for the transfer of copyrights, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Personal Income Tax Act.
