Open Energy Transition (OET) is a non‑profit organisation advancing the global energy transition by developing innovative open‑source tools and data solutions for energy and grid planning. Our vision is to make open approaches the global standard by 2030, enabling energy planning that is more accessible, transparent and effective. This shift is essential to better guide trillion‑dollar worth public and private investment toward affordable, sustainable and secure energy systems. OET’s work is already being adopted by leading system operators, regulators and philanthropic partners.

Job Overview

Location: Fully remote (EMEA countries only)
Employment Type: Full‑time
Languages Required: English proficiency, other languages an advantage
Experience Required: As below
Salary Range: Competitive, based on experience
Reports to: Head of Software Engineering
Work Travel Requirements: None
Start Date Goal: Late 2025/Early 2026 (TBD)

About the Role

As a DevOps Engineer you will work on internal and client projects. The primary project initially will be OET’s Cloud Solver – an internal tool to automatically provision, deploy and clean‑up cloud resources to run large‑scale and complex energy models on the cloud efficiently and user‑friendly. You will set up code repositories, CI/CD pipelines to ensure code quality and automate testing and deployment, and write scripts and tools to automate tasks and ensure reliable and reproducible code. Knowledge of Python and Snakemake, which most modelers use, is a plus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provision, design and manage cloud infrastructure for OET’s Cloud Solver and client projects.
  • Deploy software products composed of multiple services to production environments securely and reliably.
  • Implement security measures to ensure sensitive client data complies with geo‑restrictions, privacy policies and security best practices.
  • Automate routine tasks and develop tools (e.g., Python scripts, bash scripts, Makefiles) to improve system efficiency.
  • Set up observability and monitoring tools for quick troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, incident response and alerting.
  • Conduct system performance tuning, troubleshooting and capacity planning to ensure reliability and efficiency.
  • Work with Python‑based data processing and modelling pipelines using Snakemake, Apache Airflow and similar tools.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience deploying cloud services (GCP, AWS, Azure) and distributed microservices‑based web apps, and managing databases.
  • Experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins), containerisation tools (Docker, Kubernetes), IaC (OpenTofu), monitoring (ELK, Prometheus, Grafana) and Python environment management (venv, conda, uv).
  • Nice to have: data workflow management (Snakemake) and distributed HPC computing (SLURM).
  • Effective asynchronous communication skills, ability to work independently and a growth mindset.
  • Bonus: startup or energy sector experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly self‑managed, remote, transparent culture where initiative and ownership are valued.
What We Offer
  • A flexible, fully‑remote work environment with autonomy and zero micro‑management.
  • The opportunity to support passionate leaders committed to positive societal change in the energy sector.
  • A culture that values transparency, empathy, trust, humility, diversity, collaboration and recognition.
  • Open‑door policy and reciprocal feedback – you’ll always know where you stand.
  • Flat hierarchy where titles are not emphasized and all contributions are valued.
  • Competitive salary with growth potential; benefits depend on region of residence.
  • Supportive onboarding and training tailored to your strengths and career ambitions.
  • The ability to shape our culture and processes as we grow and improve.
