Qualifications
- High School Diploma preferred.
- Read and write at a minimum of 9th grade level.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Physically capable of performing assigned tasks, including lifting up to 55 pounds.
- Ability to work with staff, students, and the public.
- Previous experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Other alternatives to the above qualifications may be accepted as deemed appropriate by the Board.
Employment Terms
This is an “at‑will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees.
Emergency conditions may arise which will require attention at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy.
Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
Job Goals
To maintain the physical school facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety, so that full educational use of them may be made at all times.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Keep building, premises, sidewalks, driveways, play areas, and grounds neat and clean at all times.
- Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Shovel, plow, and/or sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as needed and in accordance with district policy.
- Check daily to ensure all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during building occupancy.
- Sweep, vacuum, and dust classrooms daily, and clean corridors after school and as needed during the day.
- Scrub, wash, and disinfect bathroom floors daily; clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Wash windows as assigned by the Lead Custodian.
- Perform yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting and tree trimming to maintain a safe and attractive school grounds.
- Maintain floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Make minor building repairs and report necessary major repairs to supervisor.
- Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on motors and other mechanical equipment when required.
- Immediately report any damage to school property to supervisor.
- Remain on school premises during school hours and during non‑school hours when building use has been authorized and attendance is required.
- Be responsible for opening and closing the building each school day, ensuring all doors and windows are secured and lights are turned off except those left on for safety reasons.
- Move furniture and equipment within the building as required for activities and as directed by supervisor.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Maintain high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
