Job summary

Spelman College seeks an Advancement Communications Officer to develop and deploy communications that advance fundraising, donor engagement and stewardship priorities. You will craft newsletters, email campaigns, donor stories and press materials while coordinating with the Communications Division to ensure brand alignment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field is required.
  • Minimum three years of job-related experience; higher education fundraising experience preferred.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with excellent organizational ability.

  • Collaborate with Director to create digital and print content: donor/student stories, features, press releases, newsletters and emails.

Job description

Position Title

Position Title Advancement Communications Officer

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Advancement Communications and Stewardship, the Advancement Communications Officer develops and deploys communications that advance fundraising, donor engagement and stewardship priorities, including newsletters, email campaigns, donor and student spotlights, features, and press releases. The role also helps manage communications tracking and analyzes engagement data and audience trends to inform strategy, while working closely with Advancement partners. Additionally, the Advancement Communications Officer serves as a liaison to the Communications Division to ensure alignment with institutional messaging, brand standards, and campaign priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Advancement Communications and Storytelling
  • Execute communications that support fundraising, donor engagement, and stewardship priorities across the Division of Institutional Advancement.
  • Partner with the Director to develop compelling digital and print content, including donor and student stories, features, press releases, newsletters, email campaigns, and event communications.
  • Ensure content reflects donor impact and aligns with advancement strategy, institutional messaging, brand standards, and campaign priorities.
Mass Communications and Deployment
  • Manage the development, deployment, and timing of mass communications, including the monthly newsletter, email campaigns, and other donor-facing communications using approved platforms and tracking systems.
  • Build, schedule, and execute communications, ensuring accuracy, appropriate segmentation, quality, and timely delivery.
  • Maintain communications calendars, workflows, and project tracking systems to support coordinated outreach, engagement, and stewardship.
  • Monitor engagement metrics, audience trends, and communication performance to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
Donor Communications and Stewardship
  • Support donor communications, including acknowledgment letters, impact reports, stewardship messaging, cultivation materials, and other donor touchpoints as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between Institutional Advancement and the Communications Division to support alignment and coordination.
  • Collaborate with Advancement partners, external partners, and vendors to support donor engagement, stewardship initiatives, and events.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field and a minimum of three years of job related experience are required. Experience in higher education fundraising preferred

This position requires a creative and confident communicator with outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills. Excellent organizational and planning skills; self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management and attention to detail. Experience in successfully managing multiple projects at the same time in a busy office environment and ability to interact with other team members to communicate and present ideas. Must possess excellent oral communication skills with the ability to respond and interact with individuals and groups at various levels both internal and external level. This position requires excellent customer service focus skills.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the ability to perform advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). In addition to producing correspondence, duties may involve assignments that require creating brochures, spreadsheets with formulas and pivot tables, tables, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters and computer generated graphics. Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Canva and Constant Contact, iModules and Dreamweaver, Banner Advancement Module and Internet navigation preferred
