Job summary

Smart Working is hiring a Lead Symfony & PHP Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain core backend systems. You will work in an Agile team with PMs, designers, and engineers to deliver scalable features and maintain high test coverage using PHPUnit.

This role suits someone who leads technical discussions, mentors teammates, and ships well-tested solutions that meet business needs, with remote-first work and a focus on robust, maintainable code.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience with PHP
• 3+ years of hands-on Symfony experience
• 2+ years writing unit tests with PHPUnit
• Strong experience with MongoDB
• Familiarity with Design Patterns (OO)
• Familiarity with JavaScript, React, Node.js, and/or TypeScript
• Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipeline workflows

Responsibilities

• Develop backend features aligned with business goals and customer needs
• Maintain and improve test coverage using PHPUnit
• Build scalable, testable APIs and backend systems
• Write clean, maintainable code meeting quality standards
• Review requirements and provide technical input
• Collaborate with product, design, and QA teams
• Monitor systems and respond to issues on on-call cycles
• Lead technical discussions and mentor others
• Participate in code reviews and suggest improvements
• Document features and architecture for team knowledge sharing
