Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Lead Symfony & PHP Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain the core backend systems of our products. You’ll work as part of an Agile team with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver scalable features.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring others, shipping clean, tested solutions, and driving technical discussions in a remote-first environment with global collaboration.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of PHP development experience.
• 3+ years hands-on Symfony experience.
• 2+ years writing unit tests with PHPUnit.
• Excellent communication in cross-functional teams.
• Strong MongoDB experience.
• Familiarity with OO design patterns.

Responsibilities

• Develop backend features aligned with business goals and customer needs.
• Maintain and improve test coverage with PHPUnit.
• Build scalable, testable APIs and backend systems.
• Write clean, maintainable code that meets quality standards.
• Review requirements and provide technical input and feedback.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, and QA teams.
• Participate in on-call rotations and issue response.
• Break down projects into tasks and guide others.
• Engage in code reviews and constructive feedback.
• Drive process improvements and technical enhancements.
• Follow secure coding practices and document architecture.
