Job summary

Applitrack is seeking a School Crossing Guard to help ensure the safe arrival and dismissal of students at designated crossings. You will manage traffic flow, assist children and families, and maintain a visible, friendly presence at the curb.

You will work closely with principals, teachers, and police to address safety concerns and follow crossing procedures. The role is part-time, aligned with the school calendar, and requires reliable performance in all weather.

Qualifications

  • Must pass a comprehensive criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the assigned crossing location on time and remains at the post for the full scheduled morning and afternoon shifts.
  • Wears the required high-visibility vest, uniform, and safety equipment at all times while on duty.
  • Uses a stop sign, whistle, and hand signals to stop traffic and direct students safely across the street.
  • Stops traffic only when it is safe to do so and ensures all vehicles have come to a complete stop before allowing students to enter the roadway.
  • Instructs and reminds students of safe crossing practices, including looking both ways, using crosswalks, and waiting for the signal to cross.
  • Monitors the crossing area for hazards, unsafe driver behavior, and unauthorized persons, and reports concerns immediately to the school office or law enforcement.
  • Records license plate numbers and descriptions of vehicles that fail to obey traffic signals or create unsafe conditions, and reports them as directed.
  • Follows all established district crossing procedures, local traffic laws, and safety protocols.
  • Treats all students with patience, kindness, and respect while maintaining firmness and fairness.
  • Maintains a courteous and professional demeanor with parents, motorists, and community members, including during difficult or stressful situations.
  • Assists students who are lost, injured, or in distress and notifies school staff promptly.
  • Communicates with the principal or designee regarding schedule changes, absences, equipment needs, and safety concerns.
  • Provides advance notice of absences so that coverage can be arranged whenever possible.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies, severe weather, and unusual circumstances in accordance with district procedures.
  • Maintains and properly stores all assigned equipment.
  • Participates in required training, safety meetings, and refresher sessions.
  • Demonstrates a collaborative and professional work ethic.
  • Adheres to Board Policy, administrative rules, and regulations.
  • Reports to work daily and arrives on time.
  • Takes responsibility as a mandated reporter.

JOB SUMMARY

The effective and successful school crossing guard is responsible for ensuring the safe arrival and dismissal of students at designated crossing locations before and after school. This role involves controlling traffic, directing students and families across streets and intersections, and maintaining a visible, positive presence that promotes safety for students, parents, and the surrounding community.

The crossing guard works closely with school staff, district transportation, and local law enforcement to identify safety concerns and follow established crossing procedures. The crossing guard serves as a friendly and dependable representative of the district to students, families, and motorists.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrates reliability, good judgment, and the ability to remain calm and alert in busy traffic conditions.
  • Presents a positive, professional, and ethical image to students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Demonstrates patience, courtesy, and enthusiasm when interacting with children and families.
  • Uses clear/concise oral communication and effective hand signals, whistle, and stop-sign techniques.
  • Able to communicate effectively with students, parents, motorists, school staff, and law enforcement.
  • Must complete crossing guard training provided by the district or local law enforcement prior to beginning duties.
  • Must have adequate vision and hearing, with or without correction, to monitor traffic and respond to safety hazards.

Health examination for new employees part-time or full-time:

Chapter 122 Article 24-5 of Illinois School Code mandates that School boards shall require of new employees evidence of physical fitness to perform duties assigned and freedom from communicable disease, including tuberculosis. Such evidence shall consist of a physical examination and a tuberculin test and, if appropriate, an x-ray. The cost of such examination shall rest with the employee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
