Company Description

The Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust (LRBT) is a leading nonprofit organization in Pakistan dedicated to preventing curable blindness and visual impairment among communities living around the poverty line. LRBT provides free or highly subsidized surgical and medical treatment for a wide range of eye conditions, including cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and corneal diseases. With a nationwide network of 20 hospitals and over 50 clinics, LRBT delivers high-volume, high-impact eye care every day. On average, more than 10,200 patients are seen in OPDs and around 1,100 surgeries are performed daily. LRBT is the major provider of eye care services in the country, improving the quality of life for countless patients across Pakistan.

Role Description

This full-time, on-site Consultant Ophthalmologist role is based in Karāchi and focuses on delivering comprehensive, evidence-based eye care to a diverse patient population. The Consultant Ophthalmologist will perform detailed ophthalmic assessments, diagnose and manage acute and chronic eye conditions, and provide consultation on complex cases. Daily responsibilities include performing cataract and other ophthalmic surgeries, administering laser treatments where indicated, and supervising post-operative care and follow-up. The role also involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior doctors and clinical staff, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and adhering to LRBT’s clinical protocols and ethical standards. The Consultant Ophthalmologist is expected to support outreach activities and contribute to training programs aimed at expanding access to high-quality eye care.

Qualifications
  • Strong clinical foundation in Medicine and Ophthalmology, with the ability to manage a broad spectrum of eye diseases.
  • Competence in Optometry-related assessments, including refraction, visual acuity evaluation, and ocular health screening.
  • Advanced skills in Ophthalmic Surgery, particularly cataract and anterior segment procedures, with safe and efficient surgical practice.
  • Experience in Laser applications for eye care, such as retinal laser treatments and anterior segment laser procedures.
  • Recognized medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology (e.g., FCPS, FRCS, MS, MCPS or equivalent), along with valid registration with the relevant medical council.
  • Demonstrated experience in a high-volume clinical or hospital setting, preferably in eye care or nonprofit healthcare environments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, supervise junior clinicians, and contribute to clinical training and capacity building.
  • Strong communication skills, patient-centered approach, and commitment to equitable, non-discriminatory care for underserved populations.
  • Familiarity with clinical audit, quality assurance, and adherence to infection control and patient safety standards.
