Responsibilities

Based at the main campus, the Ophthalmic Technician will be responsible for supporting ophthalmologists and nurses in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care. The role includes conducting preliminary assessments, assisting in procedures, maintaining equipment, and ensuring adherence to hospital policies and JCIA standards.

  • Prepare and maintain diagnostic/procedure rooms and ensure equipment is in working order.
  • Perform initial patient assessments, including computerized eye/glasses testing, vitals, and screening for communicable diseases; ability to perform A-scan and lensometry would be preferred.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during examinations and clinic procedures, including lasers/LASIK, and administer pupil dilation as instructed.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Provide respectful, professional, and patient-centered interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Support teaching and learning activities within the department and actively participate in technical training and audits.
  • Address patient queries, report incidents promptly, and contribute to departmental improvement initiatives.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Department Head.
Requirements

You should have:

  • Matriculation (Pre-medical); Intermediate Science preferred.
  • At least 1–2 years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Nursing Technician Training course (AKUH or equivalent).
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Training in IV cannulation (as applicable).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work in a team.
  • Willingness to work shifts and extended hours as needed.
