To ensure the safe, reliable, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of all utility systems supporting manufacturing operations. The Utility Engineer will be responsible for operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, optimization, energy management, and continuous improvement of utility equipment and systems to minimize downtime, improve efficiency, and control operating costs.
Key Responsibilities
Utility Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure uninterrupted availability of utilities required for production operations.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain utility equipment including
- Air compressors and compressed-air system
- Boilers and steam distribution system
- Chillers and cooling towers
- HVAC and ventilation systems
- DG sets and power-generation systems
- Water treatment and RO plants
- Pumps, motors, cooling systems, and associated equipment
- Vacuum systems and other plant utilities
- Conduct preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance of utility equipment.
- Troubleshoot utility-related equipment failures and restore operations promptly.
- Ensure proper equipment start-up, shutdown, isolation, and emergency procedures.
Energy Management & Efficiency
- Monitor electricity, gas, water, steam, compressed air, and other utility consumption.
- Identify opportunities for energy conservation and cost reduction.
- Analyze utility consumption trends and establish efficiency benchmarks.
- Reduce utility losses through leak detection, equipment optimization, and process improvements.
- Support implementation of energy-saving projects and initiatives.
- Prepare periodic utility consumption and efficiency reports.
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules for utility equipment.
- Maintain equipment history, maintenance records, checklists, and inspection reports.
- Coordinate predictive maintenance activities such as vibration monitoring, thermography, oil analysis, and other condition-monitoring techniques.
- Ensure timely replacement of critical spare parts and consumables.
- Maintain minimum stock levels of critical utility spares.
Boiler & Steam Systems
- Monitor boiler operation, steam pressure, temperature, fuel consumption, and efficiency.
- Ensure safe operation of boilers and associated equipment.
- Monitor steam distribution and identify leakage or heat losses.
- Coordinate boiler inspection, testing, calibration, and statutory requirements.
- Ensure water treatment and boiler-feed-water parameters remain within defined standards.
- Ensure efficient operation of chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, pumps, and HVAC systems.
- Monitor chilled-water temperatures, pressures, flow rates, and system efficiency.
- Maintain appropriate environmental conditions for production areas where required.
- Troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration-related issues.
Electrical & Power Utilities
- Coordinate with Electrical Maintenance for reliable power availability.
- Monitor DG sets, transformers, UPS systems, power-factor correction, and associated utility systems where applicable.
- Support preventive maintenance of power-generation and distribution equipment.
- Monitor abnormal power consumption and identify potential efficiency improvements.
Water & Wastewater Management
- Ensure reliable operation of water-treatment, RO, softener, filtration, and wastewater systems.
- Monitor water quality parameters and treatment performance.
- Control water consumption and minimize wastage.
- Maintain proper records of water treatment, chemical consumption, and plant performance.
Safety, Compliance & Environmental Responsibilities
- Ensure all utility operations comply with company HSE policies, statutory requirements, and applicable engineering standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of utility areas and equipment.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and implementation of permit-to-work, LOTO, and safe-work procedures.
- Identify and mitigate operational and equipment-related risks.
- Maintain required inspection, testing, calibration, and compliance records.
Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in installation, commissioning, modification, and expansion of utility systems.
- Review technical specifications and assist in equipment selection.
- Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, consultants, and project teams.
- Identify opportunities for automation and utility-system optimization.
- Implement Kaizen, TPM, energy-saving, and reliability-improvement initiatives.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare daily/monthly utility operation reports.
- Maintain utility consumption, maintenance, breakdown, and efficiency records.
- Prepare MTBF, MTTR, equipment availability, and utility-performance reports.
- Maintain updated SOPs, equipment manuals, P&IDs, drawings, and maintenance checklists.
- Report major breakdowns, abnormalities, and improvement actions to management.
Qualification
- Bachelor Engineering in Mechanical, Electrical discipline.
- Relevant professional certifications in utilities, energy management, or safety will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 4–6 years of relevant experience in utility operations and maintenance within a manufacturing/industrial environment.
- Experience with boilers, compressors, chillers, HVAC, cooling towers, pumps, water-treatment systems, and power-generation systems will be preferred.
