Job description

**This is a full-time independent contractor role. Candidates must be able to commit exclusively to this position and not engage in part-time or freelance work once hired.**

Are you a detail-oriented tax professional who enjoys going beyond tax preparation to support strategic tax planning, improve processes, and work with technology to make things more efficient?

If you're someone who learns new systems quickly, thinks creatively, takes initiative, and enjoys working in a growing environment where you can help shape processes and client experience, this opportunity could be a great fit for you!

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Competitive compensation package tailored to your experience and expertise;
  • Enjoy a generous amount of PTO credits, which can be used for vacation, sick leave, and holidays;
  • Flexible schedule with a 4-hour overlap during the afternoon Mountain Time hours, with some collaboration in Eastern Time as needed, typically starting around 5:00-6:00 AM PH time, offering seamless collaboration with the team and clients;
  • Embrace the convenience of remote work - operate from the comfort of your home;
  • Secure a full-time role as an Independent Contractor, with no BPO involvement;
  • Gain exposure to tax planning and advisory beyond traditional tax preparation;
  • Work with a smaller group of clients through deeper, more integrated client engagements rather than high-volume tax preparation;
  • Join a growing startup environment where you can contribute to developing internal systems, tools, team culture, and client experience;
  • Unlock a fulfilling career path with opportunities to grow as the firm expands;
  • Join a relationship-focused team that values quality, initiative, adaptability, and continuous learning.

CLIENT BACKGROUND

Our client is a specialty CPA firm serving Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) and financial advisors through proactive tax planning, tax preparation, and personalized advisory services. They focus on delivering guaranteed tax savings through niche expertise, deeper client relationships, and responsive, proactive service.

The firm believes business should be about more than making money and is committed to building a culture centered on excellence, personal growth, and a healthy work-life balance. Rather than relying on high-volume tax work and long hours, they are building a modern firm focused on meaningful advisory work and high-value client engagements.

As a growing organization, team members have the opportunity to help shape internal systems, improve the client experience, and contribute to the firm’s continued growth. Joining the team means helping build a better model for the future of tax advisory while developing your own skills and career along the way.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare individual and business tax returns accurately and efficiently, including multi-state returns.
  • Prepare workpapers and organize/import supporting documents for tax planning and preparation.
  • Identify potential tax issues, inconsistencies, missing information, and planning opportunities during preparation and escalate them appropriately.
  • Provide direct support to the Tax Planning Manager across tax preparation and planning activities, including tax planning calculations, projections, estimated tax payments, entity-level planning, and implementation of tax planning strategies.
  • Set up and maintain customized tax planning workbooks and tools using Excel.
  • Coordinate tax-related client administration, including document requests, follow-ups, payment information, and maintaining complete and organized engagement documentation.
  • Work within Karbon to manage tasks, deadlines, client information, and workflow.
  • Use technology and internal tools to complete work efficiently and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support the development and refinement of internal Excel workbooks, tools, automations, and processes.
  • Follow established quality control measures and firm protocols to ensure accurate and consistent work.
  • Communicate proactively with the Tax Planning Manager and team regarding deadlines, priorities, questions, and potential issues.
  • Communicate with clients primarily through email regarding document requests, tax administration, and other information needed to support their engagements.
  • Support the team with other tax planning, preparation, and administrative projects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of US tax preparation experience within a US accounting or tax firm.
  • Strong knowledge of US tax preparation and tax compliance processes, with a solid understanding of accounting fundamentals such as journal entries and general accounting principles.
  • Strong Karbon experience is highly preferred, with the ability to navigate and use the platform effectively in a remote workflow.
  • Experience with Lacerte is highly preferred.
  • Very comfortable learning and using new technology, with the ability to quickly adapt to new software, systems, tools, and processes.
  • At least basic knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO) and familiarity with accounting workflows.
  • Strong Excel skills, including comfort working with complex spreadsheets, formulas, and customized workbooks.
  • Experience with Tallyfor, DataSnipper, or similar tax and accounting platforms is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with team members and clients. Phone communication may be required as the role develops.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and stay organized using systems and workflows.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with a proactive approach to improving processes and efficiency.
  • Willingness to learn tax planning and take on responsibilities beyond traditional tax preparation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Reliable, stable and high-speed internet
  • A dedicated, private workspace that is free from distractions, ensuring confidentiality and optimal focus on tasks.

DESCRIPTION OF IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Adaptable & Tech-Savvy: You learn new software quickly and are comfortable adapting to changing systems and processes. You naturally look for ways to use technology to improve efficiency.

  • Organized & Autonomous: You can manage your workload, deadlines, and priorities independently. You use systems and tools effectively to stay organized and communicate proactively when something needs attention.
  • Proactive & Resourceful: You take initiative rather than waiting for instructions. You anticipate what needs to be done, ask thoughtful questions, and find practical solutions when challenges arise.
  • Strong Communicator: You communicate clearly and professionally in English, particularly through email. You’re comfortable handling technically complex information and communicating effectively with clients and team members.
  • Strong Critical Thinker: You look beyond simply completing a task and think about how it can be done better. You’re comfortable analyzing problems, thinking creatively, and identifying opportunities to improve processes and efficiency.
