The Underwriting Associate supports underwriters in reviewing, processing, and servicing new and renewal business. This role helps ensure timely, accurate handling of submissions, documentation, and broker communication, enabling underwriters to focus on risk evaluation and portfolio management.
Key Responsibilities
Submission & Quote Support
- Log, track, and organize new and renewal submissions from wholesale brokers
- Review submissions for completeness and follow up with brokers on missing information
- Prepare files and rating worksheets based on underwriter instructions and company guidelines
- Assist with generating quotes, indications, and binders using internal systems
Documentation & Policy Processing
- Prepare and process bind orders, endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements
- Ensure all underwriting documentation is accurate, complete, and filed in the appropriate systems
- Verify that policy forms, limits, deductibles, and premiums match the underwriter's instructions
- Coordinate with operations / policy issuance teams to ensure timely policy delivery
Data Entry & System Maintenance
- Enter and update account information, pricing data, and coverage terms in underwriting and policy systems
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records of accounts, quotes, and bound policies
- Run and compile reports (e.g., submission logs, hit ratios, premium reports) as needed
Broker & Internal Communication
- Serve as a point of contact for brokers for routine questions on documentation, status updates, and basic account information
- Communicate clearly and professionally, representing the underwriting team effectively.
Compliance & Guidelines
- Ensure underwriting files meet internal audit, regulatory, and compliance requirements
- Follow underwriting authority levels and escape any items outside of set guidelines
- Assist with gathering information for audits and internal reviews
Team & Administrative Support
- Support underwriters with day‑to‑day administrative tasks (e.g., file setup, correspondence, follow‑ups)
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and process improvement initiatives
- Help develop and maintain standardized templates, checklists, and procedures as needed
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred (business, finance, risk management, or related field a plus)
- 1–3 years of experience in insurance, underwriting support, or related administrative role preferred (wholesale or specialty lines a plus)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and documentation
- Solid organizational and time‑management skills; able to handle multiple files and deadlines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, comfortable working with brokers and internal teams
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with underwriting/policy systems a plus
- Ability to learn technical insurance terminology, coverage forms, and underwriting guidelines
- Team‑oriented, dependable, and able to work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment
