Job summary

SMEC (An SJ Group Company) seeks a Project Inspector (Tunnels) to provide on-site inspection and technical oversight of tunnel construction, ensuring works comply with approved design documents, project specs, quality standards, safety rules and contractual obligations.

The role focuses on verifying construction quality, documenting progress, identifying non-conformances, and supporting the OE team to deliver a safe, compliant tunnel infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Experience in tunnel construction activities and ensuring compliance with design and safety standards.
• Experience inspecting infrastructure projects, identifying non-conformances and supporting QA processes.
• Experience working with contractors or engineers to resolve technical or quality issues promptly.
• Experience inspecting underground structures including lining, support and permanent works.
• Knowledge of ground behaviour and geotechnical monitoring related to tunnels.

Responsibilities

• Perform regular on-site inspections of tunnelling works.
• Verify compliance with drawings, technical specifications and quality standards.
• Use checklists and quality plans to guide inspections and identify deviations early.
• Track and document progress of tunnelling activities against the schedule.
• Maintain daily site diaries, photograph milestones, and prepare progress reports for OE and client teams.
• Engage with contractors, consultants, and project team members to exchange technical information and coordinate activities.
• Participate in site meetings and coordination reviews.
• Support the OE team in reviewing method statements, ITPs, materials approvals, and technical documents.
