Our client is a CPA-led outsourced finance firm serving restoration and trades business owners doing $1M-$5M in revenue. They bring bookkeeping, tax, and advisory into one team, so their clients stop stitching together three providers who never talk to each other.
The firm runs on EOS. Every seat has written accountabilities, a small number of measurables, and a clear next step, so you know what success looks like from week one.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a full‑time Tax Manager to lead the tax department as a division lead on the leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO. The CEO is a CPA who currently holds this seat and has planned a thoughtful handover. He stays available for the harder calls, so you’ll have a real partner on difficult positions.
This is a build‑and‑grow role. You’ll shape the capacity model, review standards, and hiring plan for a growing tax practice.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as final technical reviewer for complex and high‑risk U.S. returns
- Partner with leadership on season capacity planning and client selection
- Maintain the filing calendar across all clients and entity types
- Hire, train, and develop Tax Specialists as the department grows
- Set and uphold review standards, workpaper standards, and quality benchmarks
- Lead tax advisory: planning conversations, quarterly estimates, S‑corp compensation, and year‑end positions
- Own TaxDome as the tax system of record
- Handle agency correspondence and notices that call for professional judgment
What You Bring
- U.S. Enrolled Agent (EA) credential strongly preferred; an active U.S. CPA license also qualifies. If you’re not credentialed, clear evidence of review ownership will be considered
- 5+ years preparing U.S. tax returns, including 2+ years reviewing and owning quality for others’ work
- Strong knowledge of partnerships, S‑corps, C‑corps, and the 1040 beneath them
- Tax season experience, including capacity, calendar, and client acceptance decisions
- Ability to explain tax positions to business owners in plain language, even when the answer is no
- A genuine interest in developing people and the willingness to have hard conversations constructively
- Openness about capacity, early and in writing
- Self‑directed and organized, comfortable working fully remote
- Availability for a fixed four‑hour daily overlap with the U.S. morning (9:00 AM-1:00 PM CST)
Nice to Have
- Active U.S. PTIN, or willingness to obtain one
- Experience with construction, restoration, trades, or job‑costing businesses
- Familiarity with ProConnect, TaxDome, Intuit Tax Advisor, or QuickBooks Online
- Multi‑state filing experience
- Experience hiring and onboarding tax staff in a remote team
- Experience running proactive tax planning as a paid service
Tools You’ll Use
ProConnect, TaxDome, QuickBooks Online, Intuit Tax Advisor, TaxGPT, and Zoom, all cloud‑based.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Lead the function with backing from the CEO and leadership team
- A planned handover from a CPA who has run these returns himself
- Onboarding and training support, plus a direct line to the CEO
- Books produced in‑house, so you review returns built on files the firm controls
- Real room to shape the capacity model, standards, hiring, and tax season
- A small firm with fast decisions and no layers between you and leadership
- Client conversations that matter, where owners make real decisions on your advice
