U.S. Tax & Accounting Manager
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced U.S. Tax & Accounting Manager to oversee recurring accounting and tax services for a portfolio of U.S.-based small businesses and their owners. This role involves supervising two Senior Accountants, managing client projects and deadlines, reviewing financial and tax work, and collaborating closely with the firm owner on tax planning and complex matters.
The ideal candidate brings strong U.S. tax expertise, small-business accounting knowledge, leadership experience, and excellent organizational skills. Success in this role requires delivering accurate, efficient, and reliable services while taking ownership of projects, supporting team development, and building trusted client relationships.
This is a long-term opportunity within a growing, modern accounting firm that values initiative, accountability, continuous improvement, constructive feedback, and professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Managing a portfolio of U.S.-based small-business clients, overseeing recurring accounting and tax engagements, maintaining project calendars, and ensuring all tax, planning, and service delivery deadlines are met.
- Supervising two Senior Accountants by reviewing their work, providing constructive feedback and coaching, verifying corrections, and supporting their professional development.
- Reviewing monthly and quarterly financial statements, bookkeeping records, and reconciliations to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reasonableness, including bank, credit card, loan, payroll, owner, fixed-asset, and other relevant transactions.
- Reviewing and assisting with U.S. federal tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065, and selected 1041 returns, while overseeing year-round preliminary tax assessments and maintaining documented estimates of potential tax obligations based on available financial information and applicable firm-provided assumptions.
- Coordinating the October 15–December 15 Q4 tax-planning process, identifying potential tax issues and planning opportunities, and presenting well-researched findings, analysis, questions, and recommended next steps to the firm owner.
- Maintaining organized client communications, outstanding questions, email correspondence, follow-ups, and workflow tasks using Canopy and supplemental tracking tools as needed, while resolving routine matters and escalating material or time-sensitive issues appropriately.
- Developing trusted client relationships by preparing clear professional communications, gradually assuming direct client interaction, and taking increasing ownership of client engagements.
- Improving internal processes, templates, checklists, and workflows to strengthen efficiency, accuracy, accountability, and service quality while actively giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Requirements
- Have approximately 7–10+ years of relevant accounting and tax experience, preferably closer to 10 years, including substantial experience with U.S. taxation.
- Demonstrate proven experience supervising accounting staff, reviewing financial and tax work, managing projects, and consistently meeting deadlines.
- Possess strong small-business accounting fundamentals, including cash-basis accounting, financial statement review, reconciliations, and meaningful hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online.
- Understand U.S. tax preparation and review processes, particularly Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065, and selected 1041 returns, along with year-round tax monitoring and planning workflows.
- Communicate effectively in spoken and written English, with the confidence to participate in video meetings, collaborate with the firm owner, and eventually communicate directly with U.S.-based clients.
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, including email and inbox management, task prioritization, project tracking, follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines independently.
- Possess strong computer proficiency, efficient typing skills, spreadsheet capabilities, file management skills, and the ability to learn new software and systems quickly.
- Exhibit strong ownership, initiative, sound judgment, attention to detail, efficiency, coachability, and a commitment to quality, teamwork, and continuous professional improvement.
