Job summary

The Mary Sue and We Got This Covered are seeking an Assigning Editor to lead story sourcing, pitching, and article curation for social-first and syndicated news across multiple brands. You will scan TikTok, Reddit, and other platforms to spot big trends and frame them for wide audiences.

In a fast-paced, high-volume environment, you will write pitches, assign stories to writers, shape headlines for syndication and social platforms, and ensure accuracy and fair treatment of people in our stories.

Qualifications

• Experience as an assigning, commissioning, news, trending, or social editor in a fast-moving digital media environment.
• Strong instinct for what people will want to read and a passion for exploring new niches.
• Experience with syndication and/or social media is a plus.
• Excellent, compelling headline writing without being misleading.
• Comfortable working with traffic data to guide editorial decisions.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume pitching environment.
• Strong understanding of ethical journalism and US audiences.

Responsibilities

• Keep abreast of major world events and entertainment news, framing topics to resonate with audiences.
• Monitor social platforms daily to find stories, ideally before other publishers.
• Write clear pitches and context for writers to begin an article.
• Assign stories to staff and freelance writers.
• Frame stories and headlines for syndication and social platforms.
• Track performance and use data to refine pitches.
• Build discovery workflows and help writers improve pitching.
• Verify accuracy, credit creators properly, and treat people fairly.
• Collaborate with the editorial team to spot stories needing extra attention.
