This role is ideal for an experienced accounting or finance professional who can independently investigate historical financial issues, resolve complex discrepancies, reconstruct financial records, and drive projects from initial assessment through completion and stabilization.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working with incomplete or ambiguous data, identifying root causes, developing practical solutions, and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
Key Responsibilities
Project Execution & Financial Cleanups – Primary Focus
- Plan, execute, and oversee end-to-end accounting cleanups, reconciliations, and special finance projects with minimal supervision
- Investigate and resolve historical ledger discrepancies, unverified balances, suspense accounts, and complex reconciliation exceptions
- Perform detailed financial remediation and backlog cleanup activities
- Lead post-implementation reviews, system cutovers, and process stabilization initiatives
- Establish project milestones, action items, deadlines, and progress trackers
- Monitor project progress and ensure timely completion of assigned cleanup engagements
- Maintain clear documentation and accountability throughout each project
- Apply strong accounting principles, including GAAP and/or IFRS, to evaluate complex transactions and accounting issues
- Review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, trial balances, and supporting schedules
- Perform variance analysis and root-cause investigations
- Identify process breakdowns and recommend appropriate corrective accounting treatments
- Reconstruct historical financial data, audit trails, and supporting schedules when documentation is incomplete or unclear
- Identify risks, inconsistencies, and control gaps and recommend appropriate solutions
- Support audit readiness and financial reporting requirements
Automation & Process Improvement
- Leverage advanced MS Excel, MS Office, and AI tools to automate repetitive data extraction, cleanup, reconciliation, and reporting activities
- Develop efficient templates, trackers, and workflows to improve project execution
- Identify opportunities to use automation and digital tools to reduce manual work and prevent future accounting backlogs
- Standardize cleanup templates, project documentation, and SOPs
- Implement sustainable processes and controls following project completion and handover
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 3–5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, auditing, finance, or accounting project roles
- Hands-on experience with financial cleanups, reconciliations, accounting remediation, or special finance projects
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial statement accounts
- Experience resolving complex ledger discrepancies, suspense/clearing accounts, reconciliation issues, or historical accounting backlogs
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work through complex and unstructured data
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and MS Office
- Experience using AI tools or automation solutions to improve accounting and reporting processes is highly preferred
- Familiarity with major ERP systems and general ledger modules
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple projects and priorities
