Senior Manager - Careers in Multiple Locations | Teach For India

Teach For India works toward an India where every child gets an excellent education. Over fifteen years it has grown into a movement of about 5,000 Alumni working at every level of the education system, reaching 1 in 10 children in the country. Alumni come through a two-year Fellowship in which they teach in under-resourced classrooms, and about 33,500 children from low-income families have been taught this way. Around 1,000 Fellows are teaching today, making Teach For India the largest pipeline of skilled talent into Indian education. More than 16,000 Teach For India students have written the 10th grade board exams so far, with a 95% pass rate across cities as of November 2024. This role sits within Teach For India's Careers vertical, which sources roles, prepares Fellows and Alumni for them, and matches leaders to positions across the education and development sector.

Role

Every year hundreds of people finish the Fellowship and move into the Alumni movement, ready to build careers in education and development. The Senior Manager, Careers holds that whole journey end to end, from sourcing the right opportunities to preparing people for them and matching them well. You will be the operational lead of the Careers vertical, guiding a small team of specialists across sourcing, readiness, matching and data, holding partnerships as your own main portfolio, and keeping the cross-functional relationships the strategy depends on. It suits someone who can build something new and bring separate pieces of work into one clear journey at the same time.

Responsibilities

• Hold the Careers for Alumni strategy with the Director, Careers and the Director, Alumni Engagement, and turn it into a practical operating plan.
• Deliver against that plan across all work streams, from the Fellowship years through to later Alumni career stages.
• Manage the relationships the strategy depends on with programme and regional teams, strategy and impact, technology, and Alumni engagement.
• Make sure sourcing, preparation and matching work together as one journey rather than as separate efforts.
• Own and carry out the most important matches yourself, especially for roles in the sector that move Teach For India's goals forward fastest.
• Set the direction on which organisations and career pathways the movement builds toward, with focus on areas where Alumni are still few: government, funding and philanthropy, and organisations that shape the wider sector.
• Shift sourcing from volume to long-term fit, curating openings that are real entry points into careers lasting three to ten years.
• Build the sourcing base for later career stages, including mid-career transition roles and, with senior leaders, senior governance, policy and funding roles.
• Hold the most senior employer and sector relationships personally and keep employers and Alumni in touch with opportunities through the year.
• Move the vertical from a single end-of-cycle Career Fair push to a steady, year-round presence in the sector.
• Oversee the readiness journey so that career preparation is built steadily across both Fellowship years and continues for Alumni afterwards.
• Oversee the redesign of the Career Fair into a platform that matches people to roles based on their strengths and long-term goals, with the human resources, technology and data teams.
• Oversee the build of one reliable source of information on Fellows and Alumni, and the matching tools that sit on top of it.
• Manage and coach team members, build a strong talent pipeline, and drive engagement, growth and retention.
• Set up a monitoring and evaluation system that shows the team where to improve.
• Represent Teach For India externally and support organisation-wide work such as recruitment, selection, fundraising, volunteering and movement building.

Requirements

• 5+ years of relevant work experience.
• Experience leading a function or a team.
• Experience managing several workstreams at the same time.
• A proven record of building alliances and lasting partnerships with external stakeholders, ideally from client-facing, business development or corporate engagement work.
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to carry several parallel priorities through to delivery.
• Comfort working with data and systems, including Salesforce or a comparable CRM platform.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel for documentation, analysis, presentation and reporting.
• Excellent spoken and written English, with the ability to shape a clear message for different audiences.
• A growth mindset, with the belief that ability is built through effort and practice.
• Willingness to be based in one of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad or Gurgaon.
• Willingness to spend time in Teach For India classrooms to understand the work first hand.
• Preferred: earlier work in the development or education sector, especially in partnerships, corporate engagement, or careers and placement work.
• Preferred: comfort working with uncertainty and building new functions or programmes rather than only running established ones, since part of this role is designing the Alumni half of the strategy as it takes shape.
• Preferred: experience managing a small team of specialists, and experience of the Teach For India Fellowship.
