Job summary

Optum, a UnitedHealth Group company, is seeking a medical coder to translate doctors’ notes and medical records into universal CPT/ICD codes for insurance billing. You will ensure accuracy, leverage EMR/paper-chart experience, and stay compliant with ICD-9/ICD-10 guidelines.

Qualifications

• Active AHIMA or AAPC medical coding certification.
• Experience coding from paper charts and EMR.
• Understanding of ICD-9/ICD-10 coding in relation to HCC/risk adjustment.
• Onsite attendance is required during training; predominantly work from home thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Translate doctors' notes and medical records into universal CPT/ICD codes.
• Ensure services are coded accurately for correct billing and provider payment.
• Apply medical terminology and guidelines to ensure precision and compliance.
• Support the billing process behind the scenes for smooth operations.
• Maintain performance in coding accuracy and productivity; abstract additional data during chart review.
• Identify CPT/ICD-9 code assignments for physician and facility services (observation and inpatient) and provide documentation feedback to providers.
• Keep up-to-date coding knowledge via QM and Coding Ops teams and director guidance.
