The Sociedad Española de Astronomía is offering a predoctoral position focused on asteroid modeling and observations at CEFCA in Teruel, Spain. This opportunity allows candidates to work with both new and archival imaging data while developing key analysis tools to extract crucial information on high-priority solar system objects.
The role provides extensive support for relocation, including assistance with visa applications and local housing advice. Candidates with a background in physics or astronomy are encouraged to apply, as strong motivation and enthusiasm for research are critical.
The observational component offers the chance to work with both new and archival imaging data to extract astrometric and photometric information, including identifying fast-moving objects and potential indicators of activity. The successful candidate will gain experience in developing analysis tools and selecting targets for dedicated follow-up observations, supporting both modeling efforts and the rapid characterization of high-priority Solar System objects.
The numerical component provides an opportunity to apply and extend the model simulating coupled dynamical and thermal evolution. This includes selected asteroid targets, address objects with incomplete constraints, such as missing astrometric data or spin-state information, and develop enhancements to the model using modern techniques to robustly estimate thermal properties and their uncertainties. The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Bojan Novakovic.
The PhD program structure will be determined jointly by the selected candidate and the supervisor, taking into account the candidate’s background and interests. Candidates should have a relevant background in physics, astronomy, or related fields and meet doctoral program requirements. The selection committee values strong motivation, willingness to learn new skills, and enthusiasm for the research topic. Previous experience in related fields is an advantage but not a strict requirement; comprehensive support from the supervisor and CEFCA team will be provided.
The contract will be conducted at the CEFCA’s headquarters in Teruel, Spain. The position includes salary, essential equipment, and funding for collaborations, and attendance at national and international meetings. Support will be provided to assist with relocation to Teruel, such as guidance on visa applications for international candidates, and advice on finding local housing and settling in the area.
