Position Overview

The Power BI Developer Level 1is responsible fordeveloping, publishing, andmaintainingthe reporting assets that business leaders and operational teams rely on to run the business day to day. The role covers the full reporting lifecycle, from gathering requirements and interrogating source systems, through to data modelling, dashboard build, and ongoing maintenance of published reports.

This is a hands-on delivery role, but it is not purely a build role.The right person is comfortable questioning the data in front of them, spotting when numbers do not reconcile, and explaining what a result actually means to a stakeholder who does not work with data every day.The reporting produced in this role is used by senior stakeholders to make decisions, so accuracy, clarity, and reliable turnaround matter as much as technical skill.

Key Responsibilities

Report and Dashboard Development

Design, develop, publish, and schedule Power BI reports and dashboards against agreed business requirements.

Build andmaintaindata models that are structured, documented, and performant, applyingappropriate relationships, hierarchies, and row-level security whererequired.

Write andoptimiseDAX measures and calculation logic, andmaintainconsistency with team standards for naming, formatting, and visual design.

Monitor refresh performance and reportusage, andremediate failures or slow-running datasets.

Data Preparation and Analysis

Write, test, andoptimiseSQL queries to extract and transform data from source systems and warehouses.

Use Python for data cleaning, reconciliation, and automation tasks where Power Query or SQL is not the right tool.

Build andmaintainsupporting Excel models and working files, including formula-driven workbooks used for validation and ad hoc analysis.

Validate outputs before release, reconciling against source systems and flagging data quality issues to the relevant owner.

Automation and Process Support

Build andmaintainPower Automate flows supporting recurring reporting, data movement, alerting, andapprovalworkflows.

Identifymanual reporting steps that can be automated and propose practical improvements.

Stakeholder Engagement

Work directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify definitions, and translate business questions into technical specifications.

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Approximately 5 years of combined experience in data analysis, reporting, or business intelligence roles, of which at least 2 to 3 years must be hands-on Power BI development.

Demonstrated data acumen: able to interrogate a dataset independently,identifyanomalies, understand how source systembehaviouraffects the numbers, and reach a defensible conclusion rather than simply reproducing a visual.

Strong workingproficiencyin Power BI, including Power Query, DAX, data modelling, and publishing to the service.

Solid SQL capability, including joins, aggregations, window functions, and queryoptimisation.

Working knowledge of Python for data manipulation and automation.

Advanced Excel, including complex formulas, pivot-based analysis, and structured workbook design.

Practical experience building Power Automate flows in a production environment.

Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical detail simply to non-technical stakeholders.

Tertiary qualification in business, data or computer science, statistics, information systems, or a related field preferred.

Advantageous Skills and Experience

The following are not entry requirements, but will be viewedfavourablyand may influence placement within the level:

Exposure to other datavisualisationplatforms such as Tableau, Grafana, or Superset,indicatingadaptability across BI tooling rather than dependence ana single product.

Practical use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code in day-to-day delivery work, and an interest in applying them to improve turnaround and code quality.
