Qualifications

Job description

As a Power BI Developer you will work across multiple client engagements at once modelling data, building semantic models and reports, and leaving behind documentation clear enough that the client's own team can run and extend the solution without us. Following the development of each asset, there will be a period of several months of managed services, where you will support clients directly with any maintenance/ trouble-shooting or training needs. You will be reporting to a person that has been developing Power BI data sets/ semantic models for a decade, and has a particular views on best practice. Accordingly, you will be given direct feedback on your work and will be expected to incorporate it in future work. Receiving lots of feedback in this role is not a bad thing. It means that we believe in your potential.

• Design and build Power BI semantic models including DAX measures, calculation groups, row-level security.
• Configure workspaces, deployment pipelines, gateways and refresh schedules; apply source control and structured release practice rather than emailing .pbix files.

Quality, documentation and handover

• Produce and keep current the documentation for every solution you touch.
• Peer review other developers' models and reports against those standards, and submit your own work for the same scrutiny.

Client and team

• Keep engagement leads informed on progress, risks and scope movement early rather than at the deadline.
• Record time accurately against engagements and contribute to estimates for new work.
• Coach client staff and junior team members in Power BI practice where the engagement allows.

Relevant experience and qualifications

• Consulting environment - Working across multiple concurrent clients with billable time and fixed deadlines.
• Data modelling - Demonstrable command of Kimball data modeling concepts.
• DAX - Strong DAX including a nuanced understanding of iterator functions, aggregation functions, filter context modification and preservation. Simply being able to use Claude to write CALCULATE arguments will not add value in this role. You will need to be able to find, fix and explain DAX errors made by AI models.
• Power Query / M - Comfortable building maintainable, query-folding-friendly transformations.
• General programming principles – this role will still require the good habits that apply to any coding
• language: Documentation, variable naming, program flow, auto-validations, error handling, edge testing, and defensive coding.
• Financial acumen – Demonstrated understanding of the way that: subledgers interact with general ledgers in an accounting system; and P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement interact in a 3-way model
• Data Governance - Practical experience with workspace governance, data quality management, credential management, RLS, gateways, capacity and refresh troubleshooting.
• Version control systems for BI artefacts.
• Certification - Current Microsoft certification relevant to Power BI and/ or Fabric
• Business English – Ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English (verbally and in writing).

Well regarded, not essential

• Exposure to Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) as part of an analytics solution.
