Job Description
A Pharmacy Assistant supports pharmacists in the daily operations of a pharmacy, assisting with the preparation and dispensing of medications, managing inventory, and providing customer service. The role is essential to ensuring that medications are dispensed accurately, customers' needs are met, and the pharmacy operates efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Assist the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications as per prescriptions.
- Ensure that medication labels and instructions are accurate and legible.
- Measure, mix, or compound medications when required, under the pharmacist’s supervision.
- Verify medication stock levels and prepare prescriptions for pharmacist review.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent: A high school diploma is usually required, with courses in mathematics, science (especially chemistry), and biology being beneficial.
- Pharmacy Assistant Certificate or Diploma (Optional, but preferred): Some employers prefer candidates who have completed a formal pharmacy assistant program, which may include coursework on pharmaceutical terminology, medication dispensing, and customer service. These programs are often offered at vocational schools or community colleges.
- On-the-Job Training: Many pharmacy assistants gain experience through on-the-job training, which can last from a few weeks to several months.
