Senior Technical Consultant Middleware MQ
Senior Middleware‑MQ technical consultant with significant experience in administration and management of WebSphere MQ software to help with the design and operational delivery of Middleware‑MQ services including Incident, Change, Problem, Security/Audit, Capacity and Performance management. Excellent communication skills, a strategic vision, strong problem‑solving abilities and experience working cooperatively with large enterprise teams. The candidate will play a key role in the technical delivery/support of the implementation of WebSphere MQ software infrastructure. As part of a team, they will be responsible for oversight of Middleware‑MQ infrastructure through planning/design, capacity planning, installation, automation, configuration, deployment, troubleshooting/support, issue resolution, daily performance and availability monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Administration (Installation, configuration, tuning and support) of middleware‑MQ software components.
- SME for MQ components across various platforms – Solaris, Unix, Linux, WIN, AIX, AS400 & Mainframe, Non‑stop (queues, Queue Managers, channels, listeners, SSL etc).
- Strong understanding of MQ Hubs, MQ Clusters and how MQ speaks to applications that run on WebLogic, JBoss (Tomcat/Apache) etc.
- ITIL, ServiceNow (for Change & Incident Mgmt).
- Clear understanding of IBM MQ publish/subscribe components.
- Participate in the upgrade/patching planning and execution of the middleware‑MQ software and appliances.
- Experienced with MQ migrations, i.e., migrating MQ v7 and MQ 8 to MQ v9.2.
- Provide subject matter expertise for Issues, security related threats and vulnerabilities as it pertains to the middleware‑MQ infrastructure.
- Participate in Incident Management, Change Management, Deployment Management, Security compliance/audit and Problem Management activities.
- Participate in resolving High Severity issues and work to resolve the same in a timely manner.
- Document Root Cause Analysis for all High Severity issues and present the same to clients.
- Interact with product vendors to investigate problems and understand product roadmaps.
- React to any given technical situation that requires immediate attention to ensure maximum system availability for supported Middleware‑MQ instances.
- Participate in an on‑call escalation rotation schedule.
- Provide 24/7 on‑call production support for supported middleware‑MQ instances.
- Work alongside multiple teams both in person and on conference calls for troubleshooting and successful resolution of issues and incidents (including Mainframe‑MQ, AS400‑MQ, Non‑Stop/Tandem‑MQ).
- Ensure alignment with corporate standards and strategic technology decisions.
- Communicate and report task‑level status to management.
- Ensure adherence to applicable Change and Release Management processes.
- Clearly organize and present technical information verbally and in writing to management, read and interpret complex information; listen well and talk with high‑profile clients/customers regarding their requirements.
- Self‑motivated professional to work with minimal direction with effective time‑management skills.
- Open to flexible working conditions including after‑hours scheduled application maintenance and support.
Requirements
Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related field.
- 10–15 years relevant computer operations work experience.
- 5–10 years of experience with middleware‑MQ technologies.
- Solid understanding of software architecture, software life cycle, design principles, design patterns and software best practices.
- Ability to learn quickly and deliver in a fast‑paced, dynamic team environment.
- Proven track record of taking ownership and successfully delivering results.
Technical knowledge and skills required
- At least 10+ years working experience with large‑scale production systems.
- Knowledge or experience in the following areas is a must:
- IBM MQ
- Oracle WebLogic Application Server, JBoss Application Server, Tomcat Application Server, Apache Web Server, iPlanet Web Server, Microsoft IIS Web Server.
- Datapower XML appliances, Oracle Directory Server, CA SiteMinder, Micro Focus Arcsight appliances.
- Experience working on all flavors of Operating Systems (Solaris, Linux, Windows, etc) and Hardware (HP, IBM, Dell, etc).
- UNIX/Linux scripting knowledge (bash, perl).
- Experience with large‑scale integration and hosting environments.
- Experience working on large‑scale projects with tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with networking, load balancers, proxy servers, firewalls, security and shell scripting.
- Jakarta EE architecture, object‑oriented design methodology, Java including servlets, JSP, EJB, JMS, RMI and JDBC.
- Other relevant skills (nice to have):
- Business Applications: Service Manager, ServiceNow, etc.
- Office Automation: Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Planning & Design: Microsoft Project, Visio.
- Information Risk Management: Active Directory.
- Standards & Methodology: Agile, ITIL, Six Sigma, etc.
