Job summary

Coherent Corp. in the Philippines seeks a senior Mechanical & Automation Engineer to design fixtures, automate stations, and lead equipment upgrade projects.

You will collaborate with process and product engineers to set up assembly and test stations and develop automated solutions for the production line. The role requires 5+ years in mechanical/automation engineering, strong CAD skills (Autodesk, SolidWorks), cleanroom experience, optics knowledge, and excellent English/Filipino communication.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering required; post-graduate studies highly regarded.
  • At least 5 years in mechanical and automation engineering or semiconductor/electronics/o​​ptoelectronics fields.
  • Experience with Autodesk and SolidWorks.
  • Cleanroom experience and optics familiarity.

Responsibilities

  • Design fixtures, product mechanical fixtures, and automated stations with engineers.
  • Prepare machine operating instructions and maintenance documentation; perform FMEA studies.
  • Lead equipment design, vendor qualification, and new tooling installation.
  • Set up assembly/test stations with machines, fixtures, and software interfaces for automated processes.
  • Develop and test automated assembly/test solutions; ensure user-friendly interfaces and data capture.
  • Lead training of engineers and operators on new equipment and processes.

Job Description:
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for fixture design, product mechanical design and automated station design. Work with process engineer or relevant colleagues to test and verify the designed fixtures/stations. Follow up with the mechanical processing maker.
  • Author machine and equipment operating instruction and manual. Provide maintenance documents for all equipment and secure all maintenance activities are being carried out as per planned schedule. Perform machine and equipment FMEA studies and maintain document for out-of-control action plans.
  • Equipment design and development - new parts vendor qualification. Support new equipment installation.
  • Responsible for setting-up assembly and test stations - work closely with Product and Process Engineers to build and set-up user friendly workstations consisting of assembly machines, test equipment, jigs and fixtures, and software interfaces to automate the whole process.
  • Develop assembly and test automation solutions - responsible for design, development, simulate and test of automated assembly and test solutions for the whole production operations. This also cover design for assembly and test graphic user interfaces ensuring user-friendly programs, automated data gathering and analysis, and automated report generation.
  • Leads training of Engineers, Technicians, and Operators in operation and maintenance of newly introduced equipment and automation processes.
Education & Experience
  • B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (Physics, Electrical and related can apply). Post-graduate studies is highly regarded.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Mechanical and Automation Engineering or Semiconductor and Electronics / Optoelectronics and Fiber optics Industry.
  • Proven track record and working knowledge in Autodesk, SolidWorks and other design applications.
  • Cleanroom experience and knowledge of laser and optical systems, power meters, and source measure units.
  • With experience in automation or electrical design and optical fixture design is an advantage.
  • Experience in mechanical design on equipment and fixture, opto-device industry experience is preferred.
  • Good understanding and excellent knowledge of mechanical design on equipment and fixtures.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience on electrical circuit.
  • Strong knowledge of automation principle. Good communication (verbal and written) skill in both Filipino and English.
Skills
  • Knowledge on optics specifically on fiber optics and micro-optics device physics is a huge advantage.
  • Experience on basic optical fiber skills - fusion splicing, cleaving, termination, and testing is highly desired.
  • Familiarity on fiber optics device testing equipment such as laser sources, tunable laser source, optical spectrum analyzers, power meter, BR meter, OTDR, and related equipment.
  • Basic manufacturing statistics knowledge - correlation, process optimization, hypothesis testing, coefficient of variance analysis, six sigma, and some statistical process control methodologies.
  • Extensive laboratory experience with photonics test and measurement (measurement of attenuation, device insertion loss, return loss, beam profile, spectral profile, optical power, pulse energy, etc.). A working knowledge of LabVIEW or other object oriented programming language like C/C++and Visual Basic is a plus.
  • Familiar with industry equipment communication interfaces - GPIB, RS232, USB, etc. Able to communicate equipment with each other and create a routine specific to the assembly and test automation process. Familiar with microcontroller, PLC, and HMI automation.
  • Good industry automation skills - motion control, vision system, automatic optical inspection, data management and analysis.
  • Able to interpret product design and specification then develop automated robust test and assembly processes to achieve these requirements considering productivity, product quality, and product reliability.
  • With knowledge on statistical methodologies and tools. Working knowledge of SAS JMP or Minitab is a strong plus.
  • Business skills - responsible for managing budgets, leading a team, and liaising with suppliers. Should have strong negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Able to interpret materials safety data sheets to create or form proper safety practices in each process. Keen to operations safety details considering health and safety of individuals as top priority in all actions.
  • Strong attention to detail combined with system-level thinking.
  • Excellent team and interpersonal skills. Strong leadership ability and potential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A working knowledge of laser and optical fiber safety is a plus.
