About The Role:
This position supports the creation of designs relating to pump systems and plumbing solutions. The role covers the mechanical design and detailing of packaged pump systems and their associated pipework, framework and equipment, from selection and specification through to the drawings and documentation required for manufacture.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering
- Determine system duty requirements — flow, head, static lift and friction losses — and select pumps accordingly from manufacturer performance curves.
- Design pump set arrangements including pumps, valves, manifolds, pressure vessels and baseframes.
- Select and size pipework and associated components to suit the specified duty and application.
- Select materials and components appropriate to the fluid, duty and service environment.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models of the existing pump system product range, using SolidWorks.
- Translate those 3D CAD models into high-quality 2D drafts suitable for manufacturing.
- Provide sound mechanical designs for new pump systems, as well as updates and improvements to existing products.
- Perform calculations to validate designs and ensure compliance with relevant standards.
- Produce bills of materials and build specifications required for manufacturing.
- Specify the functional control requirements of a pump system, such as duty and standby operation, alternation, and level or pressure control.
- Support performance testing and commissioning of completed pump systems.
- Provide technical support to customers and other internal departments.
- Work with the engineering and production teams to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
- Update or create technical documentation such as user manuals, risk assessments, reports, technical datasheets, procedures, testing and commissioning plans.
- Undertake reviews of completed work to ensure compliance and manufacturing suitability.
- Ensure adherence to OH&S standards.
Quality and Continuous Improvement
- Contribute positively to building a world-class Team through APP’s core values ‘ERIK’ & ‘100/0/0’ Ethos (Excellence, Responsibility, Integrity, Knowledge) (We take 100% responsibility, Zero excuses, zero blame).
- Contribute to own performance review and development process.
- Undertake annual personal and professional development.
Requirements
Qualification & Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in engineering are essential.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role within mining, manufacturing and/or related industries.
- Strong understanding of pumps and plumbing solutions.
- Experience with hydraulic systems, including pump hydraulics and system curves.
- Sound understanding of Australian Standards for design.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
Hard Skills (Systems)
- SolidWorks PDM or similar document management system.
- AutoCAD software or similar.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software — general computer skills.
Soft Skills
- Be a self-starter who takes ownership of assigned tasks and works autonomously.
- Applies independent engineering judgement — able to identify when a specification, drawing, or instruction does not look right, and raises it rather than reproducing it.
- Able to work from incomplete or inconsistent information: identifies what is missing, asks the right questions, and proposes a solution rather than awaiting instruction.
- Able to explain and justify the reasoning behind design decisions.
- Recognises when a problem falls outside their experience and escalates it promptly rather than proceeding on assumption.
- Works effectively as part of a team, including with colleagues in other locations and time zones, seeking input and clarification where required.
- Provides regular and proactive updates on progress, and flags delays or obstacles early.
- Receives and acts on design review feedback constructively.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
Non-negotiable skills
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar role within mining, manufacturing, and/or related industries.
- EXPERT LEVEL in SolidWorks.
