Manufactures and/or rebuilds parts and items of equivalent from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys.

Responsibilities

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

• Performs machine work on a wide array of military vehicle parts & customer requested fabrications through the use of machine tools and precision handwork.
• Lays out work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, model pf part to be made, or other specifications, determines which machine tool would best be used for each operation to be performed, which attachments are to be used on each machine, and the proper sequence of operations on each machine; and makes new job setups on a variety of different types of equipment involving accurate alignment in order to maintain specified overall tolerances.
• Sets up and operates most types of convention machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal; boring mills; bench, plain or universal milling machines; shapers; planners; internal and external; grinders; threads grinders; and radial drills.
• Frequently uses a variety of auxiliary machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads; taper attachments, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, rotary tables, etc.
• Determines speeds, feeds, and coolants, lubricants or abrasives to be used to cut, turn, drill, mill, bone, tap, ream, lap, hone, shape, grinding, or finish item.
• Maintains dimension accuracy during these processes through the use of precision measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers, inside and outside micrometers, surface gages, height gages, squares, dial indicators and comparators.
• Uses shop mathematics and handbook formulas in computing dimensions and in planning and laying out work.

• Minimum Qualifications: Education/Certifications: One-year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
• Experience:
  • Five (5) years’ experience in machine shop utilizing various machinery and techniques or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Skills:
  • Must have knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Must have knowledge of CNC operations and programming.
  • Must have a ability to troubleshoot, to determining causes of operating errors.
  • The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • Must have advanced math skills (Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry).
  • Must have excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Requires a collaborative work style, fostering cooperation, and teamwork.
  • Must exercise discretion and good sound judgement.
  • Must have good understanding of MS Office and/or other related applications.
• Working Conditions:
  • Must be capable of working in austere weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit and rainy conditions as well.
  • Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
• Physical Requirements:
  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
  • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
