ROLE OVERVIEW
The Linux System Administrator is responsible for the administration, maintenance, security, performance, and availability of Red Hat server environments supporting Bell Canada.
The role performs server patching, updates, upgrades, performance tuning, security hardening, vulnerability management, system monitoring, incident response, infrastructure changes, and automation. The position also provides after-hours on-call support and participates in disaster recovery and business continuity activities to support stable and resilient server operations.
Working as part of a global IT team, the Linux System Administrator collaborates with network, database, application, and other technology teams to support infrastructure integration, resolve operational issues, and continuously improve server administration processes through automation and effective technical documentation.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer and maintain Red Hat servers, including patching, updates, upgrades, and performance tuning, to support stable, reliable, and efficient server operations.
- Provide after-hours on-call support and respond to system incidents and alerts to minimize service disruption and restore normal operations promptly.
- Implement and manage infrastructure changes, including appropriate documentation, testing, and execution, to support controlled changes and minimize operational risk.
- Perform server security hardening and vulnerability assessments and respond to security incidents to strengthen infrastructure security and maintain established security practices.
- Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability using appropriate monitoring tools to proactively identify and resolve potential operational issues.
- Collaborate with network, database, application, and other IT teams to support seamless infrastructure integration, troubleshooting, and technology operations.
- Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning and testing to support system recovery and operational resilience in the event of an outage.
- Automate system administration activities using Python, Ansible, Bash, and applicable scripting technologies to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Create and maintain system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting documentation to support knowledge sharing, operational consistency, and effective issue resolution.
- Maintain knowledge of current technologies and trends related to server administration, security, and operations to support continuous improvement of infrastructure management practices.
