Job summary

EPAM Systems is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to drive backend development for our Internal Developer Platform (IDP) built on Backstage. You will lead architecture across catalogs, workflows, and APIs, and establish secure, scalable services integrated with Git, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and Argo Workflows.

You will mentor teams, promote best practices, and deliver streamlined developer workflows that boost productivity while maintaining robust security and RBAC across services.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of backend engineering experience.
• At least 1 year leading and directing development teams.
• Strong background in Node.js/TypeScript for backend engineering.
• Direct experience with Backstage, including backend plugin creation and API work.
• Track record building APIs and microservices to support scalable platforms.
• Working knowledge of Kubernetes and container-based environments.
• Experience with Argo Workflows or similar orchestration tools.
• Excellent English communication skills (B2 level or higher).

Responsibilities

• Direct the creation of Backstage backend plugins and services powering core platform functionality.
• Own backend architecture across catalog, scaffolder, workflows, and APIs for scalability and reliability.
• Integrate with Git, CI/CD systems, Kubernetes, and Argo Workflows to simplify platform functionality.
• Architect and roll out developer workflows and automated pipelines to boost engineering productivity.
• Build RBAC, authentication, and inter-service security measures.
• Guide scalable microservices architecture and continuous refinement.
• Coach team members and champion strong engineering practices across the organization.
