Job summary

Citibank (Switzerland) AG is seeking a Junior Java Developer to collaborate with senior engineers on building new features, writing tests, debugging backend services, and maintaining core application APIs. You will receive mentorship, code reviews, and structured training in enterprise technologies like Spring Boot, cloud-native deployments, and distributed systems.

You will contribute to feature implementation, bug fixing, and code maintenance, while growing through hands-on practice and agile

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent self-taught/bootcamp portfolio).
• Solid understanding of Core Java (11+) and OOP concepts.
• Foundational SQL knowledge and basic query writing.
• Familiarity with Git workflows (cloning, branching, pulling requests).

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend features and API endpoints as part of a Java-based stack.
• Write unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in non-production and production environments.
• Participate in code reviews and adhere to coding standards.
• Collaborate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Learn and apply design patterns, system architecture, and modern backend methodologies.

As a Junior Java Developer, you will work closely with senior engineers to implement new features, write test suites, debug backend services, and maintain our core application APIs. Key Responsibilities

• Software Development & Maintenance
• Feature Implementation: Write clean, readable Java code to implement backend features and API endpoints based on technical specifications.
• Bug Fixing: Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving application bugs in non-production and production environments.
• Code Maintenance: Refactor and optimize existing code to improve maintainability and adherence to coding standards.
• Quality Assurance & Testing
• Unit Testing: Write comprehensive unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito to maintain high test coverage.
• Code Quality: Participate in code reviews, receiving constructive feedback from senior peers to continuously improve code standards.
• Platform & DevOps Exposure
• Database Basics: Write and optimize basic SQL queries, schema updates, and work with object-relational mapping (ORM) frameworks like Hibernate.
• CI/CD Awareness: Learn to use Git for version control, merge requests, and monitor builds through automatic CI/CD deployment pipelines.
• Collaboration & Growth
• Agile Participation: Attend and participate in daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
• Continuous Learning: Dedicate time to understanding design patterns, system architecture, and new backend methodologies under the guidance of a senior mentor.

Required Technical Skills & Qualifications

Core Requirements (Must-Have)

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent self-taught/bootcamp portfolio showing strong foundational knowledge).
• Core Java: Solid understanding of Core Java (version 11 or higher), including Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts, Collections API, Exception Handling, and basic Multithreading.
• Databases: Foundational knowledge of Relational Databases (SQL) and basic query writing (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle).
• Version Control: Familiarity with Git workflows (cloning, branching, committing, pushing, and creating pull requests).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

• Familiarity with the Spring Ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data).
• Basic understanding of RESTful API design principles.
• Familiarity with Maven or Gradle build tools.
• Awareness of containerization concepts (Docker) or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience writing unit tests with JUnit.
