Job summary

Manulife/John Hancock is seeking a qualified software engineer to join our global team. You will work closely with frontend and backend developers to establish best practices for development, testing and delivery in an Agile environment, while collaborating with Product Owners and stakeholders to drive innovative solutions.

You will prototype new technologies to gain customer insights, assess emerging tools, and contribute to demos showcasing new capabilities.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of experience in frontend and backend technologies such as HTML, CSS3, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node, Angular 2+, React and Java.
• Experience with MongoDB and SQL databases.
• Experience with Spring Boot, Swagger, Node/Express and API/Service Layer frameworks.
• Familiarity with NewRelic and Kibana; strong testing foundations (Jasmine, JEST, Mocha, JUnit, Mockito).
• Strong CSS practices and frameworks (Material UI, BEM, SMACSS, Flexbox, Grid) and accessibility (ARIA, WCAG).
• Solid grounding in data structures, algorithms and OO design; knowledge of SDLC, Agile and DevOps; CI/CD; REST/SOAP APIs.
• Familiarity with modern software architectures and API-driven development.

Position Responsibilities:

Required Qualifications:

At least 3-5 years of experience in Frontend and Backend technologies such as HTML, CSS3, JavaScript, Typescript, Node, Angular 2+, React and Java. Experience in working with Database such as MongoDB and SQL. Experience in Framework and API / Service Layer such as Spring Boot (Rest Template, Feign Client, Zuul, Sleuth/Zipkin, Hystrix and Maven), Swagger, Node/Express. Familiar with NewRelic and Kibana. Good Foundation in Test Driven Technologies such as Jasmine, JEST, Mocha, Junit, Mockito (Java). Good Foundation in CSS Best practices and Framework like Material UI, BEM, SMACSS, CSS Flex-box, CSS Grid. Awareness and adherence to best practices of web standards, testing, and coding for accessibility (ARIA, WCAG). Good Foundation in data structures, algorithms, and OO Design with rock-solid programming skills. Familiarity with agile and DevOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new features. Understanding of software development lifecycle. Understanding of how technology supports Manulife business strategy. Occasionally participates in demos utilizing new tech.; control guidelines required. Familiar with modern software architectures and API‑driven development. Familiar with technologies such as: API Gateways, Messaging, Data Event Streaming, REST, SOAP, Distributed Tracing, Relational and Document Database Interface/SQL. Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to coach, participate in code reviews, share skills and methods. Works together in a small team with a common purpose, follows rules from team members.

Preferred Qualifications:

Exposure to PaaS and micro‑service architectures. Exposure to and understanding of Agile scrum methodologies and experience of working in an Agile team. Experienced in grasping and explaining high level solution architecture. Exposure to and basic understanding of collaboration tools like Slack, Skype, JIRA. Knowledge in SonarQube, Fortify and WebInspect. Knowledge in PCF (Pivotal Cloud Foundry).
