The Dental Assistant plays a key role in patient care and the efficiency of the practice.
- High School Diploma or GED: Most employers require a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Postsecondary Education (Optional but Preferred): Some dental assistants attend a formal dental assisting program, which may last from 9 months to 2 years and can be found at community colleges, technical schools, or vocational schools. These programs often offer a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experience.
- Certified Dental Assistant (CDA): In many regions (like the U.S.), dental assistants can become certified through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). To obtain CDA status, you usually need to pass exams in areas like infection control, radiation health, and general chairside assisting.
