Job description

Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Operation and Safety
  • Safely operate company-owned or assigned delivery trucks and other authorized vehicles.

  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle before and after each delivery route.

  • Check essential vehicle components, including tires, brakes, lights, mirrors, fluid levels, horn, safety equipment, and other required items.

  • Report mechanical problems, vehicle damage, accidents, or safety concerns immediately to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Follow all traffic laws, company driving policies, and applicable transportation regulations.

  • Drive defensively and exercise caution in congested areas, residential streets, loading zones, highways, and adverse weather conditions.

  • Secure cargo properly to prevent shifting, damage, loss, or accidents during transportation.

  • Park and maneuver the vehicle safely, particularly in loading docks, customer locations, narrow streets, and confined areas.

  • Never operate the vehicle while impaired, excessively fatigued, or otherwise unable to drive safely.

2. Delivery and Transportation
  • Load, transport, and deliver products or materials according to assigned delivery schedules and routes.

  • Verify delivery addresses, quantities, product descriptions, and special delivery instructions before departure.

  • Ensure deliveries are completed accurately, safely, and within the required time frame.

  • Plan routes efficiently while considering traffic conditions, road restrictions, delivery priorities, and fuel efficiency.

  • Use GPS, navigation systems, route sheets, or other company-approved tools to locate delivery destinations.

  • Obtain customer confirmation, signatures, electronic acknowledgments, or other required proof of delivery.

  • Return undelivered, refused, damaged, or incorrectly addressed items according to company procedures.

  • Collect authorized payments or documents when required by the company.

  • Immediately report missing, damaged, short, excess, or incorrect items.

3. Loading and Unloading
  • Assist with loading and unloading products, packages, equipment, or materials.

  • Inspect goods before loading to ensure they are properly packaged and in acceptable condition.

  • Arrange cargo in the truck to maximize available space while maintaining proper weight distribution.

  • Use appropriate lifting techniques and material-handling equipment when available.

  • Handle products carefully to prevent breakage, contamination, loss, or damage.

  • Follow special handling requirements for fragile, heavy, temperature-sensitive, or otherwise designated products.

  • Keep the truck cargo area clean, organized, and free from unnecessary hazards.

4. Documentation and Record-Keeping
  • Maintain accurate delivery receipts, invoices, trip tickets, manifests, route records, and other required documents.

  • Record delivery times, mileage, fuel consumption, vehicle inspections, and other information as required.

  • Ensure all delivery documents are properly signed or electronically confirmed.

  • Submit completed paperwork and electronic delivery records within the required time frame.

  • Report discrepancies between delivery documents and actual quantities received or delivered.

  • Maintain accurate records of returned merchandise, refused deliveries, damaged goods, and customer complaints.

5. Customer Service
  • Represent the company professionally and courteously at all customer locations.

  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding deliveries, schedules, quantities, and special instructions.

  • Respond appropriately to customer questions and delivery-related concerns.

  • Escalate complaints, disputes, delivery discrepancies, or service issues to the supervisor when necessary.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and behavior while interacting with customers and the public.

  • Protect customer property and respect customer premises during deliveries.

6. Vehicle Maintenance and Cleanliness
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, orderly, and presentable at all times.

  • Perform routine checks and basic maintenance activities as authorized by the company.

  • Monitor fuel levels and refuel the vehicle as necessary.

  • Ensure required vehicle documents, permits, emergency equipment, and safety materials are available.

  • Report maintenance requirements before they affect vehicle safety or delivery operations.

  • Follow the company’s preventive maintenance and vehicle inspection schedule.

7. Compliance and Workplace Safety
  • Follow company policies and procedures related to transportation, workplace safety, security, and loss prevention.

  • Comply with applicable driving, licensing, vehicle, loading, and occupational safety requirements.

  • Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Follow safe procedures when entering warehouses, loading docks, construction areas, customer facilities, and other work sites.

  • Immediately report accidents, injuries, traffic violations, property damage, theft, or other incidents.

  • Maintain confidentiality of customer, company, shipment, and business information.

Daily Duties

A typical workday may include:

  • Reporting to work on time and attending required briefings.

  • Inspecting the assigned delivery truck before departure.

  • Reviewing the delivery schedule, route, customer instructions, and required documents.

  • Checking and loading the assigned cargo.

  • Confirming that products and quantities match the delivery documents.

  • Transporting goods to designated locations.

  • Safely unloading and delivering products.

  • Obtaining proof of delivery and customer acknowledgment.

  • Reporting delivery discrepancies or customer issues.

  • Returning completed documents and undelivered/returned items.

  • Conducting a post-trip vehicle inspection.

  • Refueling, cleaning, and securing the vehicle as required.

  • Reporting vehicle or operational issues to the supervisor.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • High school diploma, vocational qualification, or equivalent preferred.

  • Valid driver's license appropriate for the type and weight of vehicle operated.

  • Appropriate professional/commercial driving license or certification where required by law.

  • Previous experience as a delivery driver, truck driver, courier, logistics driver, or similar role preferred.

  • Clean or acceptable driving record.

  • Good knowledge of local roads, routes, traffic regulations, and safe driving practices.

  • Ability to operate delivery vehicles safely and responsibly.

  • Ability to read and understand delivery documents, instructions, invoices, and basic written information.

  • Basic mathematics skills for verifying quantities, invoices, and delivery records.

  • Basic ability to use GPS, smartphones, delivery applications, or electronic proof-of-delivery systems.

  • Good communication and customer-service skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
