The driver's job begins early in the morning, possibly at 5:00 a.m. or earlier. The first responsibility is to start the vehicle up for a brief warm-up period. During this time the driver should be checking the following:
When driver begins to move the vehicle the brakes should be checked while traveling at a slow speed to make sure they are in proper working order.
At the loading location the driver should turn the vehicle off for a brief period of time (5 minutes), and after this time period has elapsed check the engine oil level. All other fluids should also be visually checked at this time, and then the hood securely latched in place.
At this time the driver should re-start the vehicle if the refrigeration unit operates off of the engine to get the cargo hold down to temperature. If the refrigeration unit operates independently, then it should be started at this time. If the engine of the vehicle needs to be kept running for the refrigeration then the driver should have an extra set of keys so that the cab of the vehicle may be kept locked at all times during the loading procedure.
At this time the food should be transported to and loaded on to the vehicle. When loading the food, the driver should be careful to distribute the load as evenly as possible.
Once the loading procedure is completed the driver should again do a walk around of the vehicle to make sure doors and latches are fastened properly and liftgate is securely in place.
The delivery route requires that the driver has the proper invoices in hand when leaving the warehouse location.
When the route is completed the driver should proceed to a designated service station and refuel. The driver should then return to the warehouse location and unload the vehicle. The deliveries and any potential problems with the vehicle should then be discussed with the warehouse manager at this time.
The vehicle should then be returned to the designated storage area and cleaned thoroughly on the interior daily and as often as necessary on the exterior to maintain a well taken care of appearance. It should then be secured for the down time, with all accessories turned off, the cab locked, the cargo hold locked, and the liftgate securely in place.
