Job summary

OneOcean is seeking a Database Specialist to design, develop and maintain data ingestion, transformation, and modelling pipelines as part of our analytics landscape and wider data ecosystem. In this role you will provide the right data at the right time to enable decision making by internal stakeholders and our customers.

Qualifications

• Experience with databases on-premises and cloud environments (MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Azure, Aurora MySQL).
• Understanding of data management, cleansing and query optimization for pipelines.
• Experience with cloud technologies (AWS).
• Scripting in JavaScript or C# and CI/CD with source control.

Responsibilities

• Create and maintain data pipeline architecture from multiple sources.
• Assemble large, complex data sets to meet business requirements.
• Identify and implement internal process improvements; automate data delivery.
• Build infrastructure for ETL/ELT data extraction and loading from diverse sources.
• Ensure robust data validation and data quality for reporting.
• Develop and maintain data warehousing, modelling and pipelining for storage/retrieval.
• Keep data separated and secure per best practices.
• Ensure data from information sources is accurate and coordinate with other functions.
• Stay up-to-date with latest cloud data technology.
• Produce documentation: data models, specifications, and data operation communications.
• Provide data exports for verification and external system integrations.
• Data mining and analysis; migrate documents as needed.
• Experience with REST API usage and integration.
• Communicate outputs effectively to stakeholders; work in fast-paced environments.

Navigating the position: Database Specialist

OneOcean is looking to recruit a Database Specialist. In this role you will be designing, developing, and maintaining data ingestion, transformation, and modelling pipelines as part of the organisation's analytics landscape and wider data ecosystem. In this critical role you will provide the right data at the right time to enable decision making by both internal stakeholders and our customers.

Please note this is a 12 month fixed term contract

Key Responsibilities

• Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture from multiple data sources.
• Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements.
• Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
• Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources.
• Ensure robust data validation and verification processes to ensure the correctness of data for reporting.
• Develop and maintain data warehousing approaches, including the modelling, and pipelining of data for storage and retrieval.
• Keeping data separated and secure as per best practice guidelines.
• Ensure that the data taken from the information sources is accurate, liaising with other business functions when necessary.
• Proactively keep up to date with the latest cloud data technology
• Produce supporting documentation, such as specifications, data models, relation between data and other data objects, required for the effective development, usage, and communication of the data operations solutions with different business units, as and when required to ensure that overall objectives are met.
• Providing data exports for customer verification and sunsetting customers.
• Providing data exports as seed data for external systems integrations.
• Data mining & analysis.
• Documents migration.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Experience working with databases on-premises and/or cloud-based environments such as MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Azure, Aurora MySQL etc. Microsoft Accredited or Industry recognized qualification for Microsoft SQL server will be preferred.
• Good understanding on how data management, cleansing and query optimisation influences pipeline and data model design.
• Experience using cloud technologies (AWS preferred)
• Experience with scripting languages (e. g. Java Script, C#)
• Demonstrably strong problem-solving skills to help design and implement solutions to data problems. Highly numerate and logical
• Experience of CICD technologies and Source control.
• Understand and apply infrastructure knowledge to develop and maintain an efficient environment.
• Modelling datasets in a way applicable for use in different visualisation tools (e. g. PowerBI)
• Strong stakeholder management skills
• Ability to clearly communicate and present outputs to stakeholders.
• Experience of working in fast paced environments to strict deadlines.
• Team player and can communicate effectively to technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Passionate about continuous improvement, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• The ability to manage time, prioritise tasks, self-review your work and produce deliverables of a high quality under tight client deadlines in time pressured environments.
• It would be useful if you've got experience with some of these technologies- AWS Glue, AWS RDS, AWS Aurora, AWS S3, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, PostgreSQL, Python, Bitbucket, Liquibase, Jenkins, Octopus.
• Experience working with REST API.
• Good command of the English language written and oral

Nice to have

• Experience with building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines with SnapLogic as part of an automated workflow on high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources.
• Experience of using project tracking and reporting system Monday, Zendesk
