Assistant Vice President for Strategy
Responsible for supporting the board of directors (BOD) in portfolio strategy decisions and supporting targeted Strategic Business Units (SBUs) in the development of Business Unit (BU) strategies. Contributes to transforming energy for a better world, working closely with AP Business Groups, Business Units, and Corporate Service units to deliver results, create positive community impact, and develop skills in a supportive, purpose-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Portfolio-level strategy: Support the board of directors in making portfolio or market choices -- entry and exit, including new and existing markets through various channels (wholly-owned, JV, investment fund), taking into account shifts in technology, customer preferences, and evolution of business models.
- BU-level strategy: Support business units within their market to identify and understand developments in technology, preferences and regulations and the impact of these on strategy, prospects, priorities.
- Help business units spot, assess, and take decisions on new opportunities.
- Develop and analyze strategic plans and initiatives:
- Spot changes/trends in markets and assess impact on AP and BUs and new opportunities.
- Develop/ analyze options and responses to changes in collaboration with BUs and key stakeholders.
- Develop/ analyze new opportunities considered attractive by BOD.
- Act as adviser to CEO on market changes.
- Facilitate execution of strategy in support of and in collaboration with Executive Team members.
- Put in place monitoring measures, including input metrics, to drive performance and progress toward strategic goals.
- Create a business and organizational dashboard for impact and effectiveness.
- Lead AP's portfolio strategy planning exercise.
- Introduce ideas and new approaches to setting strategy at AP and BUs and streamline the process over time.
- Coordinate annual strategy exercise in coordination with budgeting process.
- Manage special projects:
- Handle specific projects related to strategy at portfolio and BU level.
- Support review of investments from strategy perspective.
- Capture innovations and new knowledge created internally, and share throughout the organization where relevant.
- Supervise modeling of strategic impact of various initiatives:
- Model impact of strategic initiatives on SBUs.
- Model impact of various market changes, trends.
- Development of initiatives:
- Assess competitive situation.
- Assess internal capabilities.
- Assess best way forward to capture opportunity.
- Review potential transactions/JVs/acquisition opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Marketing or any 4-year related course.
- Master’s degree is an advantage.
- At least 5 years combined experience in strategic planning and business process management; experience in electricity market modeling using forecast tools (EMCAS, Marketsym, Aurora, Plexos) preferred.
- Background in new and emerging energy types and technology preferred.
