Job Description
TheInternational Potato Center (CIP) isseeking a motivated and analytically rigorous Associate Scientist inAgricultural Economist to contribute to the generation and application ofsocioeconomic evidence on the adoption, outcomes, and impacts of potato,sweetpotato, and related agricultural innovations. The successful candidatewill design and implement adoption and impact studies, apply appropriatequantitative and qualitative methods, and translate findings into practicalrecommendations for research programs, partners, and decision-makers. Theposition will help ensure that CIP's research investments are informed bycredible evidence and contribute to measurable development outcomes.
Aboutthe position: TheAssociate Scientist, Agricultural Economist will be part of CIP's Urban FoodSystems team and will report to the Head, Urban Food Systems, working closelywith the Regional Director. The position may be based in any region where CIPoperates (LAC, AFRICA or ASIA). The role works across CIP programs, CGIARresearch initiatives, and national partners to design and deliver socioeconomicresearch, adoption analysis, and impact assessment. Working with scientistsacross economics, agriculture, nutrition, gender, climate, andotherdisciplines, the Agricultural Economist will integrate socioeconomic analysisinto research projects and programs, coordinate field research and datacollection, produce high-quality scientific and policy-relevant outputs, andsupport partners in strengthening their capacity in impact assessment, adoptionresearch, and the use of socioeconomic evidence.
Key responsibilities:
Socioeconomic Research and Impact Assessment (65%)
- Designand implement socioeconomic research on the adoption, outcomes and impacts ofpotato, sweetpotato and related agricultural innovations.
- Developappropriate research questions, analytical frameworks, methodologies, samplingapproaches, survey instruments and implementation plans for assigned studies.
- Applyestablished and emerging quantitative and qualitative methods in agriculturaleconomics, impact assessment and adoption analysis, seeking senior technicalguidance where required.
- Coordinatefield research and data collection activities, ensuring compliance withapproved protocols, research ethics, data protection requirements, timelinesand budgets.
- Ensurethe quality, completeness and appropriate documentation of research data,analytical methods, datasets and supporting evidence.
- Analyzeprimary and secondary data using appropriate econometric, statistical andmixed-method approaches and interpret the implications for research anddevelopment programs.
- Producetechnically sound reports, working papers, policy briefs, presentations,datasets and peer-reviewed publications within agreed quality standards anddeadlines.
- Communicateresearch findings through accessible products for policymakers, practitioners,partners and other non-specialist audiences.
- Monitorthe implementation of assigned activities, identify delivery risks andrecommend corrective action to the relevant project or program leader.
- Contributeevidence to program planning, priority-setting, monitoring, evaluation,learning and institutional reporting.
- Promoteresponsible research practices, open access and the appropriate documentationand sharing of research outputs.
- Maintaincurrent knowledge of developments in agricultural economics, adoption research,impact assessment and relevant analytical methods.
- Performother related duties consistent with the purpose and level of the position.
Engagement (30%)
- Workwith scientists across economics, agriculture, nutrition, gender, climate andother disciplines to integrate socioeconomic analysis into research projects and programs.
- Coordinateassigned adoption and impact assessment activities with CIP programs, CGIARresearch teams, country offices and external partners.
- Engagenational agricultural research organizations, universities, governmentagencies, development organizations and other partners in study design, datacollection, analysis and dissemination.
- Providetechnical guidance to research assistants, consultants, enumerators, studentsand partner researchers contributing to assigned studies.
- Supportpartner capacity-building in impact assessment, adoption research, data qualityand the use of socioeconomic evidence.
- Contributetechnical content to concept notes, funding proposals, budgets and workplans incollaboration with program leaders, scientists, resource mobilizationcolleagues and partners.
- Presentand discuss research findings with technical and non-technical stakeholders,highlighting their implications for programs, policies and investmentdecisions.
- Participatein relevant internal and external technical networks, communities of practiceand institutional knowledge-sharing activities.
Safeguarding and Ethics (5%)
- Conductall activities in accordance with CIP and CGIAR policies on research ethics,safeguarding, data protection, open access, conflicts of interest, health andsafety, and responsible conduct of research.
- Complywith applicable national and international laws, regulations and standards.
Requirements
What are we looking for?
Expertise and Specialization:
- Ph.D.in Agricultural Economics or a related field. A Ph.D. in Agribusiness isdesirable.
- Atleast 5 years of experience in similar positions.
- Strongprofessional experience with an interdisciplinary background and capacity inthe application of quantitative methods for impact assessment.
- Provenexperience working with methods and approaches to measure and estimate theadoption of agricultural technologies and its determinants.
- Provenexperience in approaches, methods, and tools to carry out economic impactassessment in an agricultural development context.
- Experiencein database management and analysis using appropriate econometric techniques.
- Strongworking experience in methods and tools for value chain analysis, includinggender-differentiated impacts.
- Experiencein experimental design, agronomy, and field experimentation; excellent computerliteracy and data management skills.
- Experiencein program and project management.
- Relevantpublications in international peer-reviewed journals.
- Strongcommunication and networking skills, with interest and demonstrated ability towork in interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and multi-cultural teams.
