Muscat University is seeking an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Shipping to enhance its Faculty of Transport & Logistics. The post holder will deliver high-quality teaching and engage in research, focusing on sustainable practices in the shipping industry.

Assistant Professor in Sustainable Shipping

Reports to Dean of the Faculty of Transport & Logistics

Purpose of the Position

Muscat University is seeking to expand its Faculty of Transport & Logistics by appointing an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Shipping. Applications are welcome from those with experience in teaching and research across a range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, sustainable maritime transport, green shipping, decarbonization of shipping, environmental regulations in maritime, and the circular economy in logistics.

With an ethos of providing exceptional student experience, the post holder will work with the Faculty Dean to ensure efficient and effective delivery of modules. The holder will be responsible for teaching modules such as: Sustainable Shipping and Decarbonization; Green Port Management; Environmental Regulations in Maritime (IMO, MARPOL); Alternative Fuels and Propulsion; and Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

The holder will be responsible for ensuring that curriculum management and enhancement activities comply with the required standards of the Omani accreditation authorities, such as the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA). In addition to teaching, the post holder will contribute to the supervision of UG final‑year projects, PG dissertations, and research‑related activities.

The candidate must hold a PhD in Sustainable Shipping, Maritime Transport, Environmental Management, or a closely related field to be appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor; a minimum of 2 years’ experience in Higher Education teaching is required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the GCC region.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality teaching experience for the undergraduate and graduate Transport, Logistics, and Management programmes, with a focus on sustainability in the shipping industry.
• Construct, plan, and assess student assignments.
• Liaise with the Faculty Dean on all student matters, including timetabling, academic, and technical support.
• Undertake the role of Academic Advisor / Personal Tutor.
• Undertake research and scholarly activity with a view to publishing in quality international academic journals.
• Engage with external maritime and logistics bodies and industry to enrich the student experience, including visiting students on industrial placements.
• Engage with the external community and stakeholders to promote the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
• Participate in university meetings and events, including Board of Examiners, Programme Reviews, Planning and Monitoring Committees, and Staff/Student Liaison.
• Maintain flexible working patterns which may include some evening and weekend work in support of Programme/Faculty/University business.
• Actively engage with businesses, professional bodies, port authorities, and shipping companies; organise student outreach and invite industry speakers to enhance student experience.
• Any other duties as deemed necessary by the Dean.

Qualifications and Experience

• Master's in Sustainable Shipping, Maritime Transport, Environmental Management, or a closely related area for Lecturer rank; PhD (or equivalent) in Sustainable Shipping, Maritime Transport, or a closely related field for Assistant Professor rank.
• Professional qualifications and/or memberships in recognized bodies (e.g., Nautical Institute, CILT UK, or an international equivalent).
• Ability to communicate with clarity on complex & conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge & understanding, and to peers, using high‑level skills & a range of media.
• Ability to think critically and promote innovation and creativity.
• Demonstrates competencies, core behaviours, and supplementary behaviours that support and promote the University’s core values.

• One to two years of experience teaching modules in Sustainable Shipping, Maritime Transport, or a closely related field in Higher Education.
• Experience in the Omani and GCC HE environments; strong links to the maritime and sustainability industry.
• Academic accreditation or quality assurance experience.
• Experience with sustainability frameworks such as the IMO 2050 strategy or GHG reduction targets.
