Job summary

Tasman District Council is seeking a motivated environmental professional to lead its telemetered water metering data collection program in the Richmond region. You will work with water users and contractors to gather data and deliver critical information for resource management and environmental decision-making.

The role involves analysing water use trends, maintaining data systems, supporting flood warning operations and contributing to water resource investigations.

Qualifications

  • Degree or higher in natural/physical sciences, environmental science, hydrology or related field.
  • At least five years in environmental monitoring, resource assessment, or water resource management.
  • Experience with environmental data and time-series databases.
  • Knowledge of water metering systems and related regulations/ compliance.
  • Understanding hydrological processes and water resource assessment.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills; ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Good relationship-building and customer-focused approach.
  • Current driver''s licence; willingness to work in the field.
  • Competence in swimming and availability for flood response when required.

About the role

This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll combine field work, data analysis, stakeholder engagement and technical expertise to support sustainable water management across the region.

You'll lead Council's telemetered water metering data collection programme, work closely with water users and industry contractors, and provide critical information that supports resource management, drought response, compliance activities and environmental decision-making.

From analysing water use trends and maintaining quality data systems to supporting flood warning operations and contributing to water resource investigations, you'll play an important part in helping Council make informed decisions for the future.

What you'll bring

We're seeking someone who combines strong technical capability with a practical, collaborative approach.

You'll ideally have:

  • A degree in natural or physical sciences, environmental science, hydrology, or a related discipline
  • At least five years' experience in environmental monitoring, resource assessment or water resource management
  • Experience working with environmental data and time-series databases
  • Knowledge of water measurement regulations, water metering systems and compliance requirements
  • An understanding of hydrological processes and water resource assessment
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and a customer-focused approach
  • A current driver's licence and willingness to work in the field
  • Competent swimming ability and availability to assist during flood response events when required
