Job summary

WorkSafe New Zealand is recruiting a User Experience Designer to bring user-centred design expertise to WorkSafe Mahi Haumaru. You will help teams understand user needs, map journeys, surface pain points and opportunities, and test design concepts with users and stakeholders so services and processes are practical and fit for purpose.

The role requires conducting research, creating journey maps, and collaborating across technical and non-technical teams to turn insights into tangible design

Qualifications

• Experience applying user-centred design methods across services and processes.
• Ability to conduct interviews, observations or usability testing.
• Proven capability to turn research into journey maps and prototypes.

Enterprise Planning and Implementation is a new group established at WorkSafe to strengthen planning, coordination, and implementation across the organisation, particularly to improve how work is prioritised, sequenced, and supported through to delivery.

The Business Design Services team sits within Enterprise Planning and Implementation and works across WorkSafe to support better planning, coordination and implementation. The team partners with business analysts, planners, subject matter experts and delivery teams to design practical, coherent solutions that support organisational priorities.

About the role / Ō te tūranga

As User Experience Designer, you will bring user-centred design expertise to business design activity across WorkSafe Mahi Haumaru. You will help teams understand user needs, behaviours and experiences, map journeys, surface pain points and opportunities, and test design concepts with users and stakeholders so services, processes and ways of working are practical, effective and fit for purpose.

• Conduct user research to understand needs, behaviours and experiences
• Map user journeys and identify pain points, opportunities and insights
• Develop and test concepts and prototypes with users and stakeholders
• Collaborate with analysts, planners, subject matter experts and delivery teams
• Share clear design outputs to support implementation and improvement
• Experience applying user-centred or human-centred design methods
• Experience conducting interviews, observation or usability testing
• Ability to turn research into journey maps, concepts or prototypes
• Strong collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams
• Clear communication of design insights to varied audiences

Salary range / Awhe utu

The expected appointment base salary is $83,137 -$91,571 (KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contributions are additional). From 1 April 2026 our KiwiSaver employer contribution increased to 3.5%.
