Job summary

AIA in Auckland, New Zealand, is seeking an experienced Underwriter to assess medical and financial risk and make fair underwriting decisions. You will support advisers, customers, and partners while applying guidelines and collaborating with colleagues to protect the company from undue risk.

You will build trusted relationships through clear communication and sound judgment, explaining decisions to ensure transparency and drive policy conversion.

Qualifications

Your Role with Us

As an Underwriter at AIA, you play a key role in helping people access insurance cover by making fair, balanced, and customer-focused underwriting decisions. Working within the Customer division, you assess medical and financial risk for both new and existing business while supporting positive outcomes for customers, advisers, and partners. You build trusted relationships through clear communication, thoughtful decision-making, and excellent service, while protecting AIA from undue risk. Collaborating with experienced underwriters, medical professionals, and reinsurers, you contribute to continuous improvement, share knowledge with colleagues, and grow your expertise in a supportive and values-driven environment.

Your Impact
  • Assess medical and financial information to make sound, fair underwriting decisions that balance customer needs with risk outcomes
  • Build trusted relationships with advisers, customers, and internal stakeholders through responsive, clear, and professional communication
  • Explain underwriting decisions confidently to support understanding, transparency, and policy conversion
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, authority limits, and reinsurance requirements consistently to maintain quality and compliance standards
  • Identify potential non-disclosures and take appropriate action to protect the integrity of underwriting decisions
  • Support the development of colleagues by sharing knowledge, encouraging collaboration, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
Your Capabilities
  • You have 3+ years of experience in medical and financial underwriting and use sound judgement to assess risk and determine appropriate terms
  • You bring strong critical thinking skills and analyse complex information from multiple sources to make balanced decisions
  • You are a confident communicator and presenter, able to engage audiences and develop strong, productive stakeholder relationships
  • You bring a customer-focused mindset and consistently deliver high-quality outcomes while managing risk effectively
  • You have strong attention to detail and maintain accurate documentation across systems and underwriting platforms
  • You may also have a relevant qualification and experience contributing to process improvements that enhance efficiency and service quality
