Awanui Balclutha is seeking a Trainee / Registered Phlebotomist to join the Patient Services team. This permanent, part-time role (30 hours per fortnight) provides hands-on experience in a busy collection centre, with some training in Dunedin.

Qualifications

  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand and comply with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples from patients in community and hospital settings.

Awanui Labs - Balclutha (previously known as SCL) provides high-quality diagnostic pathology services to the community, healthcare professionals and their patients. Awanui labs - Balclutha is owned by Awanui Group (Previously known as Asia Pacific Healthcare Group), a healthcare company committed to providing facilities and services that deliver exceptional care to its clients.

Our Patient Services Department is responsible for the collection of blood samples and handling contained specimens, i.e., human blood, faeces, urine, tissue etc from patients within the community and the hospital. These samples are then processed and tested in our state-of-the-art medical laboratory.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:

Our Patient Services Department is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee to join our team at our Balclutha Collection Centre (some training will be in Dunedin). This permanent, part-time role (30 hours per fortnight) offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional, supportive environment.

You’ll have the chance to develop your skills, learn from an experienced team, and play a key role in supporting patient care and laboratory services. This is a rewarding position for someone eager to grow, make a meaningful contribution, and be part of a dynamic healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collect blood samples from patients in both community and hospital settings.
  • Handle and manage contained biological specimens, including blood, faeces, urine, and tissue, in accordance with safety and compliance standards.
  • Ensure accurate labelling, handling, and transport of patient specimens.
  • Support the processing and testing of specimens using Point of Care testing machines.
  • Maintain patient care, confidentiality, and quality standards always.

If you are not already registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, we will support you working towards becoming a Qualified Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician within 2 years of employment.
