Job summary

KiwiRail Freight in Christchurch is seeking a hands-on rail yard worker to perform shunting operations, guide train drivers, and position wagons into customer sidings in all weather. No rail experience is required as training and nationally recognised qualifications are provided with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.

This role operates on planned shift rosters, offering a clear pathway for career progression.

Qualifications

• Physical fitness and ability to perform manual work outdoors.
• Clear communication via radio during wagon movements.
• Willingness to learn and safety-focused attitude.
• Previous shift work experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Perform shunting operations, including connecting and disconnecting wagons.
• Guide train drivers during wagon movements and coupling activities.
• Position wagons into customer sidings.
• Conduct safety-critical checks to ensure trains are fit for departure.
• Work closely with a small team and communicate clearly via radio throughout your shift.
