Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Auckland invites applications for a 12-month fixed-term Trainee Cardiac Sonographer in the Cardiology Investigation Unit. You will train alongside experienced clinicians, performing supervised echocardiography and assisting TOE.

The role requires a health science degree or nursing cardio experience, with postgraduate study commencing in early 2027. NZ residency is required; start November/December 2026.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Health Science, Science, Medical Imaging, or similar for MRTB registration.
• Or be a Registered Nurse with Cardiology experience.
• At least two years of clinical patient care experience.
• Strong academic record and commitment to postgraduate study.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
• Genuine interest in Cardiac Ultrasound and patient care.

About the Role

The Cardiology Investigation Unit is seeking afull-time Trainee Cardiac Sonographerto join our dedicated team of Cardiac Sonographers, Cardiac Physiologists, and Cardiac Physiology Technicians in afixed-term training position.

As a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer, you will receive comprehensive clinical training while working alongside experienced clinicians. Your role will include:

• Performing adult transthoracic echocardiography under supervision.
• Assisting with transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) procedures.
• Developing the knowledge and practical skills required to become a qualified Cardiac Sonographer.

These trainee positions are rarely available and highly sought after. So, if you have a Bachelors level science or health science degree suitable for registration with the Medical Radiation Technologist Board (MRTB) and the drive and determination to succeed then we want to hear from you.

This training position involves gaining a post graduate level qualification through either the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) or the University of Auckland (UoA) - by both distance learning, attendance of residential block courses and through on the job training. The academic pathway will be confirmed at time of enrolment.

Note, candidates who hold New Zealand (NZ) residency (rather than citizenship) will only have access to the UoA academic pathway (subject to recognition of suitable undergraduate degree).

To be eligible for enrolment in the qualification you must be a NZ citizen or NZ resident (including citizens of the Cook Islands, Tokelau, and Niue) or an Australian citizen.

The successful applicant must be available to commence employment inNovember/December 2026, with postgraduate study commencing inMarch 2027(subject to university enrolment dates).

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A Bachelor's degree in Health Science, Science, Medical Imaging, or another relevant discipline suitable for postgraduate study and registration with the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB);or
• Be a Registered Nurse with Cardiology experience.

• A strong academic record and commitment to postgraduate study.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• A genuine interest in Cardiac Ultrasound and a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.
