Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Cardiac Sonographer to join our Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley team. This position will suit someone who is reliable, motivated, resilient, and committed to delivering exceptional patient-centred cardiac care.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career in cardiac ultrasound while training across both our tertiary and secondary cardiac sites. Our Cardiology ultrasound service provides care across a broad range of specialties, including oncology, cardiothoracics, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, arrhythmia management, heart failure, adult/paediatric congenital heart disease and structural heart disease.

You will work with modern ultrasound machines in a supportive environment where learning, collaboration, and clinical excellence are highly valued. Working under the supervision of experienced Cardiac Sonographers and alongside a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, sonographers, and fellow trainees, you will develop the knowledge, technical expertise, and clinical skills required to perform a wide range of cardiac ultrasound examinations, including the acquisition, interpretation, and reporting of transthoracic echocardiograms.

The role combines supervised clinical practice with self-directed theoretical study while pursuing a University of Auckland Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Cardiac Ultrasound).

The University of Auckland qualification and all required clinical competencies must be successfully completed within the two-year timeframe of the fixed-term training contract.

You’ll work with state-of-the-art ultrasound technology in a busy and progressive cardiology service caring for a population of approximately 445,000 people.

About you
  • Relevant academic background 'Bachelor of Science Degree with major in Physiology or equivalent in order to be eligible for enrolment with Auckland University (UoA) PGDipHSc Cardiac Ultrasound (UoA) course
  • Required to meet Medical Radiation Technologist Board (MRTB) requirements as a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer
  • Excellent communication and professionalism - Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and a compassionate approach to patient interaction within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Clinical or patient-facing experience - Experience working in a healthcare setting, with high demand and stressful situations. Demonstrating a commitment to patient care, safety, and high clinical standards.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and physiology - Particularly of the cardiovascular system, with the ability to apply this knowledge into a diagnostic imaging environment.
  • Technical aptitude and attention to detail - Ability to learn and apply Echocardiographic imaging techniques, analyse findings, and maintain accurate records. High attention to detail
