Job summary

Boulcott Hospital & Specialist Centre in Lower Hutt, Wellington, is seeking an experienced Theatre Manager to lead our perioperative services, including theatres, PACU, and SSD. This senior role focuses on clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and building high-performing teams.

Reporting to the Hospital Services Manager, you will drive safety, quality, and governance while guiding team leaders and multidisciplinary staff to optimise theatre utilisation and service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse or Anaesthetic Technician with current practising certificate.
  • Minimum 5 years' perioperative experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience in staff leadership, workforce planning, and service management.
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality systems, and healthcare legislation.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proven ability to lead change and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the day-to-day operation of theatres, PACU, SSD, and procedural areas.
  • Driving patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
  • Supporting and developing Team Leaders and multidisciplinary perioperative teams.
  • Managing workforce planning, recruitment, retention, and succession planning.
  • Monitoring budgets, resources, and departmental performance.
  • Working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and hospital leadership.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to improve theatre utilisation and service efficiency.
  • Contributing to strategic planning, service development, and future growth initiatives.
  • Maintaining compliance with healthcare standards, regulations, and accreditation requirements.
  • Championing a positive workplace culture focused on continuous improvement and innovation.

We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Theatre Manager to lead our Perioperative Services team. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a motivated healthcare professional who is passionate about clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and building high-performing teams.

Reporting to the Hospital Services Manager, you will provide strategic, operational, financial, and clinical leadership across our perioperative services, including Operating Theatres, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), Sterile Services Department (SSD), and associated procedural areas.

About the Role

As Theatre Manager, you will be responsible for the overall performance and development of perioperative services while ensuring exceptional patient outcomes, workforce engagement, and operational excellence.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Essential
  • Registered Nurse or Anaesthetic Technician with a current practising certificate
  • Minimum 5 years' perioperative experience, including leadership responsibilities
  • Demonstrated experience in staff leadership, workforce planning, and service management
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality systems, and healthcare legislation
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Proven ability to lead change and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Desirable
  • Postgraduate qualification in perioperative practice, leadership, management, or a related field
  • Private hospital experience
  • Financial and operational management experience.
