Job summary

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) seeks a Team Leader for the National Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme. Based in one of Te Kura’s regional offices, you will lead a national Kaiāwhina Whānau team, guiding whānau-centred support to improve learner engagement, wellbeing, and literacy/numeracy outcomes.

You will coach leaders, use data to drive programme improvement, and champion equity for Māori and Pacific ākonga while strengthening community partnerships.

• Lead a national team of Kaiāwhina Whānau within the National Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme.
• Coach and support Kaiāwhina Whānau to respond to the needs of ākonga and whānau, including at‑risk gateways.
• Oversee targeted support for priority ākonga and inform programme improvement using data and insights.
• Champion equitable outcomes for Māori and Pacific ākonga; build partnerships across Te Kura and communities.
• Contribute to strategic initiatives to help every ākonga engage, achieve, and thrive.

Team Leader, National Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme

Based in one of Te Kura regional offices: Wellington, Palmerston North, Masterton, New Plymouth, Hastings, Rotorua, Gisborne, Wairoa, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland, Whangarei, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill or Queenstown

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand's largest school with a roll of up to 24,000 ākonga (students) at any point of time. We provide personalised and authentic learning programmes through distance education from early childhood to NCEA Level 3, including to young adult and adult learners. Our ākonga are at the centre of all we do. Our vision is to enable our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, empowering them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities. The Team Leader, Whānau-Centric Support leads a national team of Kaiāwhina Whānau within the National Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme, helping strengthen ākonga engagement, wellbeing, and literacy and numeracy outcomes through a whānau-centred and culturally responsive approach.

Working alongside the Programme Lead and other leaders across Te Kura, the Team Leader coaches and supports Kaiāwhina Whānau to effectively respond to the needs of ākonga and whānau, particularly those identified through at-risk gateways. The role oversees targeted support for priority ākonga, uses data and insights to inform programme improvement, and promotes hauora and positive learner outcomes.

The Team Leader also champions equitable outcomes for Māori and Pacific ākonga, strengthens partnerships across Te Kura and communities, and contributes to strategic initiatives that help every ākonga engage, achieve, and thrive.

The successful applicant will be a passionate and experienced leader who is committed to improving outcomes for ākonga and whānau through high-quality, whānau-centred support.

Additionally, youbring:

Proven experience leading and developing teams, implementing programmes, and building strong relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi, community organisations, and education partners.

Have the ability to use data, evidence, and feedback to inform decision‑making, monitor progress, and drive continuous improvement in learner engagement, wellbeing, and achievement.

Demonstrate culturally responsive practice grounded in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, with a strong commitment to equity and excellence for Māori and Pacific learners.

Be an effective communicator, coach, and collaborator who can foster a positive team culture, support strengths‑based practice, and create culturally safe and inclusive environments where ākonga and whānau feel valued, connected, and empowered to succeed.
