Job description

We're looking for a Team Leader Financial Accounting to join our dedicated Financial Accounting Team within the Finance and Risk Group. This permanent, full-time role is based in our central Wellington office. The role reports to the Financial Controller and plays a key leadership role in ensuring the financial integrity, transparency, and statutory compliance of Greater Wellington and subsidiaries.

About the role:

The Finance and Risk Group supports Greater Wellington through financial planning, reporting, treasury, policy, risk management, commercial advice, and financial stewardship. The Financial Accounting Team ensures accurate financial reporting, manages audit and taxation obligations, oversees rates-related activities, and provides technical accounting support across the organisation and its subsidiaries.

As Team Leader Financial Accounting, you will lead a team of three finance professionals and be responsible for:

• Leading the delivery of high-quality financial and statutory reporting.
• Managing the annual reporting process and external audit relationship.
• Providing expert technical accounting advice on accounting standards, legislation and taxation matters.
• Overseeing rates-related activities, including rates setting, rating processes and stakeholder relationships with territorial authorities.
• Supporting financial reporting and governance requirements for Council subsidiaries.
• Driving continuous improvement of financial controls, systems and processes.
• Developing team capability and fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.

Skills and experience required:

To be successful in this role, you'll bring:

• A Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ) or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
• Significant experience in financial reporting and technical accounting within a complex organisation.
• Strong knowledge of accounting standards, statutory reporting requirements, taxation, and financial governance.
• Experience managing external audits, tax compliance, and robust internal control frameworks.
• Proven people leadership experience, with a focus on coaching and developing high-performing teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and provide trusted advice to senior leaders.
• Experience in local government funding, rating systems, and legislative requirements would be highly regarded.

The total remuneration for this position, including all benefits, is $108,673 to $163,010 per annum, with a midpoint of $135,842. Starting remuneration will depend on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
