Job summary

Tauranga City Council is seeking an experienced Transport - Engineering Services Team Leader to guide a skilled team of engineers, provide specialist transport engineering advice, and drive planning, delivery and continuous improvement of Tauranga's transport network.

The role combines technical leadership with people management, working across major projects, safety initiatives and development activities to deliver safe, practical, and future-focused transport outcomes for the city.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline or equivalent.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams and developing people.
  • Significant experience in transport engineering, traffic engineering, transport safety or infrastructure delivery.
  • Sound knowledge of transport engineering standards, safety-in-design principles and relevant legislation.
  • Experience applying transport engineering expertise across projects, planning, development and operational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Leading, mentoring and developing a high-performing team of transport engineering professionals.
  • Providing specialist transport engineering guidance across projects, programmes and strategic initiatives.
  • Overseeing investigations into network performance, transport safety and operational issues, and developing evidence-based solutions.
  • Guiding the development and application of transport engineering standards, guidelines and best practice.
  • Supporting business cases, programme development and long-term planning with robust technical advice.
  • Supporting project teams with engineering input across renewals, safety improvements and land development activities.
  • Working collaboratively with planners, project managers, asset managers, road safety coordinators, developers and external partners to support practical, well-informed decisions.
  • Driving innovation, continuous improvement and value-for-money outcomes.

We'relooking for an experiencedtechnical leaderto lead our Engineering Services Team within the Transport Division.

This is a key technical andpeopleleadership role, responsible forprovidingspecialist transport engineering advice while leading a team of skilled engineers who support the planning,deliveryand continuous improvement of Tauranga's transport network.

You'llwork across major projects, infrastructureprogrammes, land development, networksafetyand strategic planning initiatives, helping ensure transport outcomes are safe,practicaland future-focused.

Working closely with internal teams, consultants, developers, and the community,you'llprovidetrusted advice, guide technical decision-making, and support the delivery of transport solutions that make a real difference for Tauranga.

This roleoperatesin a complex and fast-moving environment, where priorities canshiftand decisions often need to balance technical requirements, community outcomes, stakeholderexpectationsand best-practice engineering. It will suit someone who stays calm under pressure, brings sound judgement, and can lead people through complexity with clarity and confidence.

To succeed in this role,you'llbring:

  • aBachelor's degree in Civil Engineeringor a related disciplineor equivalent
  • proven experience leading technical teams and developing people
  • significant experiencein transport engineering, traffic engineering, transportsafetyor infrastructure delivery
  • soundknowledge of transport engineering standards, safety-in-designprinciplesand relevant legislation
  • experience applying transport engineering expertise across projects, planning, development and operational activities
  • excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information, build trusted relationships and influence outcomes
  • political awareness, practical judgement and the ability to balance technical detail with wider community outcomes.

Experience within local government and knowledge of resource consent and development processes would beadvantageous.
